Hi Friends, Seniors, Juniors and all others.
Philosophy optional has been performing poorly in recent years (as I have been told by seniors on the forum and outside). I do believe its happening because of uncertainty element involved in the UPSC selection process as well as because of various reasons applicable to different aspirants, like lack of revision, studying from coaching notes only, not reading enough standard books (due to lack of time perhaps) etc. One more thing some warriors have suffered just because optional was not awarded good marks compared to other optional subjects, but they still managed to get around 220+ marks in CSE 2016.
People do talk about leaving the optional and taking other optional to ensure the selection in UPSC but what if the other optional too get less marks next year?? so people who have seen their mains marks can take a wise decision according to the level of their preparation at the times of mains and the marks they scored. Newbies or people who haven't written mains even once, don't think much about it.
Now coming to the
purpose of this thread-
1. I believe irrespective of our prelims result (CSP 2017), we should complete the optional subject by October 2017. If we write mains this year, fair enough but in case anyone is out, at least optional subject will be completed in time.
2.
Freshers/Newbies etc are afraid to be part of any initiatives as they think -We are not prepared yet, as we haven't done anything in optional yet! So my friends this thread is the right initiative for us

We can ask any doubts we want to without any hesitation and can Hope
that some senior guys will guide us in right direction.
No Shame in asking for knowledge. isn't it ?
3.
Seniors/experienced people- Please contribute whenever you get time. Let your knowledge guide us in the right direction. Who knows by doing this only
Bhagwan/Khuda(UPSC) awards you with 300+ marks in the optional and a place in the coveted PDF.
Friends, as the response to philosophy threads is extremely poor, I don't expect overwhelming response to this thread too! But I pray to God that at least 2-3 people show interest in this thread and let us make this thread a knowledge repository for new aspirants.
Anybody can ask anything regarding material to be followed, concepts/doubts regarding a topic, discuss previous year questions, practice answer writing on the thread, share strategy being followed by him/her etc and we hope enlightened souls will guide us, we may later form a telegram group too if like-minded people wish to. I don't know much about the optional yet! so I am too hoping people will guide me.
I will start with "Western Philosophy" from today. I have arranged Mitra and Patanjali notes and Y.Masih book too. So people let the game begin.
Comments
Any inputs are welcome
i have prepared notes , n have mitra n patanjali notes too. but never got the opportunity to write mains. also this yr i didn't gave pt. but i want to prepare optional.
i wud b glad if u all let me in.
I want to join this group
Right now, can't comment on plan for 4 months. I have started from western philosophy and I am taking one step at a time, though keeping in mind to complete the optional within 3 months.
So I would advise you to chip in and be consistent in covering optional, one topic at a time. complete that topic, revise it, revise it again. move to the next topic and repeat.
Regarding the IGNOU material- can't comment on it. I am not reading any IGNOU material. I have standard books+ mitra and Patanjali printed notes+ Internet. That should suffice.
Regarding daily studies for optional - read as long as you enjoy, don't go by hours. Go by quality time and I would say 5 hours daily is more than sufficient, as you have to study GS also.
Why don't you read from Mitra+Patanjali+internet then make notes out of it. Short notes. Go through previous year papers, try some answer writing. Then revise the notes you made. Read from standard books to go a bit deeper and bring conceptual clarity in your understanding. Attempt few previous year questions and revise again.
Senior players can guide us. but I don't think they will come forward and I don't expect anything now ! Let us gear up
Let us gear up together. I have started with Plato too.
