Choice of optional as mathematics

I am giving the UPSC exam this year. I wanted some guidelines as to which subject do I take for my optional. I always felt that I should take mathematics as my optional. However, I have got encouraging responses from my mentors and teachers. I have completed my post graduation in Engineering. I had done math in my graduation till 2nd year. So it is quite a while now. After going through the past papers, I felt confident in math paper 1 but not in paper 2. Could you help me out with my choice of this optional. If not math, is there any other subject I can choose within this short time frame that I have.
