@ram As a working professional myself i can very well understand the purpose of you starting this thread.Those like us who are preparing while working dont have the luxury of time.Therefore despite the fact that there are many standard books to be referred for a particular topic i too share your sentiment of covering a limited set of books thoroughly & then building upon those basics.My seven books that i am following are : 1).Struggle for india's independence - Bipin Chandra 2).Indian culture - Spectrum 3).Indian Polity - Laxmikanth 4).Geography -Majid HUssain 5).Economy- Ramesh Singh 6).Modern World -BV Rao 7).International Relations - Tapan Biswal
Reading a limited material many times is key for working professionals like us .Just piling up standard books would be futile & frustrating too as being in a job one would never be able to do justice with a long list of books. ;-)
my list excluding ncert is :- 1. lamikanth - indian polity 2. bipin chandra - modern india 3. india's struggle for independence 4.spectrum's - geography of india 5. ramesh kumar - economy 6. spectrum's - culture 7. ignou material suggested by mrunal
