1.“Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind” – Mahatma Gandhi. Critically examine. (GS 4)
Ans. Mahatma Gandhi helped India to achieve independence from mighty rule of british with the help of his strategy of non-violence. He showed that non-violence has great force and it can overthrow even the mammoth army equipped with modern weapons. Non-violence is a great force as:- 1.It helps in attracting masses and precipitating a great mass movement. Civil disobedience movement shows how a humble dandi march took the shape of one of the biggest mass movement in India’s history. 2.It also stirs the emotions of people who just witness a non-violent movement. For example, if arms are used against peaceful protesters,it results in strong condemnation around the world which gives further impetus to mass movement. 3.Non-violence can be sustained longer than violence which are short-lived and most of the time curbed with brute force. 4.Non-violence also helps to curb our internal anger and hatred which makes a person involved internally more stronger. However, Non-violence has its own limitations. It requires immense level of patience. At individual level, it is sometimes better to use harsh punishment or brute force to teach lesson to incorigible humans rather winning their heart by non-voilence. At mass level, non-violence lose significance in case of armed aggression. Abul Kalam Azad in his book India wins freedom has rightly criticised non-violence strategy on many occasion by saying that it must not be followed as cult but must be one of the many strategies used in struggle or it will not remain practical and effective.
