Hello friends. I am preparing for CSE 2017 by self study. I have no background in PSIR. However upon seeing the syllabus I found it more interesting than others. I have doubts regarding this optional as to the following:-
1) In recent years toppers from this optional have been generally those who had this as graduation subject (Tina Dabi) or had taken coaching under Subhra Ranjan ma'am as most of them recommend her notes. Will I be at considerable disadvantage given that I am preparing through self study.
2) Given the dynamic nature of the syllabus and questions is it possible to fetch 250 marks through self study only ?

Many people, despite their educational background, have seen their names in the final list 2 of them are:
1.http://mrunal.org/2016/06/upsc-topper-debotosh-chatterjee-bengal-political-science.html
2.http://mrunal.org/2016/06/upsc-topper-digant-anand-political-science-bijnor.html
Both are engineering students so u can look at their strategy+Debotosh is on Quora u can look at some of his answers. As far as i know Shubra Ranjan notes are used by one and all and that includes Shubra Ranjan herself they are easily available in all photocopy shops in delhi and can even be obtained by people living outside of delhi. Remember PSIR is not rocket science it is fairly straightforward except for maybe some theories that may require some contemplation, but nothing that internet, youtube, UGC channel,IGNOU cant handle. IR is completely dynamic for basics you can look at IGNOU and for for current The Hindu or IE with IDSA,Worldfocus etc.My firm belief is its doable and self study is best way to do it.
Now whether or not you can get 250 is something no one say. Do your work diligently and dont think about the marks and results. Remember people clear this exam with Malayalam,Maithili and even sindhi literature.so PSIR is way better and safer option.
