India's struggle for freedom vs Modern India(Spectrum)

edited July 2013 in History & Culture
There is a chaos between what to choose among these two. I'm a new bee : PLEASE suggest me what to read..
I finished reading Modern India ncert

Comments

  • Old ncert is best than this two
  • @Kartheek it depends on which part of the exam you are talking about..for prelims spectrum is preferable and for mains Struggle for Freedom. India's Struggle for Freedom is a concise read on various aspects (economic/political/social viewpoints) so more helpful for framing answers in the mains.
  • @Hegirabro can you list any important topics in struggle for freedom; there is already a list for India since independence ... thats why...
  • @Kartheek well I did a whole reading of the book since my optional is History...read the chapters on all the important movements and uprisings: 1857 revolt and causes, tribal uprisings, Revolutionary Terrorism, Ghadar movement, Home Rule, Swadeshi Movement, Civil Disobedience, Quit India, Moderates and Extremists and Communalism's origin/growth.
The reform movements (socio,Gurudwara and Temple Entry) and important leaders and their ideas.
  • @Kartheek well if u have quite some time then i guess u can go for plassey to partition by shekhar bandhopadhya.. its a well researched book and is used in d.u.. so its own ur own discretion to buy it if u want to
  • Spectrum is a summary of bipin chandra ... It will suffice for both pre and mains but you have to cover each page and line of the book properly even the tables given at the end of book...it fulfills the examination needs though it may not be able to satisfy your intellectual apetite
