Is it possible to clear UPSC mains in 6 months?

edited July 2013 in Miscellaneous
I always heard from coaching institutes/toppers/etc. that UPSC is a process and you need 2-3 years of preparation to clear UPSC, one who clears UPSC in their first attempt were preparing from a long time before writing for the first time and one can't clear UPSC by working hard for just 6-8 months.

How true it is?

Dear, Its a personal right to ask his/her queries and if someone feels those as irrelevant you can skip those threads, forumias have a button to bookmark your relevant threads, which helps the aspirant to keep an eye on them, so if you don't want it you can skip it.

Regarding forumias significance, I would like to state that those relevant materials are still on the forum so there is no subtraction in resources so forumias still a champ in his domain.

    Regarding the threads you mentioned

1.) Kitna Kiya motivate others, read HRM if you don't believe
2.) CSAT signature, bring some empathy in your judgements
3.) ratta, preparation strategy and dude this was the only strategy before UPSC reforms

No one is competent enough to judge the requirement of the others, neither you nor me.

Even you have your rights to claim this thread irrelevant but that doesn't mean to refer it to moderator to close those threads.

Rest you are free to say :)

You can definitely clear mains in 6-8 months, its all depends on you. Coaching institute will say these things because they will earn more if students takes classes for longer periods.
You have to properly analyse how and what to read, instead on reading every book suggested by various people. You have to spend less time on basics of various topics since you will never get direct questions in exams.
I'm myself targeting mains while studying for 5 month with working too
  • @Vazu
My friend relevance of a topic varies for each one of us.You cant judge others' thread by terming them irrelevant. You are within your rights to do so & so are others.
You cant quantify what difficulties they are facing ,through what circumstances they might be going through.
Like i myself posted a thread 'Ratta' as i needes to clear my doubts whether it is still being used & is helpfull in anyway in preparation.Trust me the reason anyone will post a thread is only because he is unsure of something & want to clarify it from other respected members here.
Some would also find your thread as irrelevant because your question again is relativistic .Yes some can clear it within that span& some can not.
You had your doubt & posted it in form of a thread likewise is the case for all others here. When they have doubts it takes the shape of a thread
Thats the beauty of this forum with each one helping each other in attaining of a common goal.

    Cheers .
    ;-)

i would like to quote one of my answers on quora.com, which applies to this question as well.

  • Institutes(and also book sellers) are interested only in money making, so natural for them to make such statements. Many say that even SSC requires one year's devoted study. So one needs to learn what all statements are to be ignored.

    Definitely its possible
i am in the same boat as well.. started preparing from 15 feb and will try to clear mains in this attempt only :)
  • @all
    Thanks for your views,

Am getting demotivated day by day, i started serious preparation in feb and expecting 235+ in prelims but even after putting 12-15hours a day am finding syllabus like a blue ocean to swim with a rubber tube in hand.

guys am new to upsc so will be thankful if you can share your strategy or tips or guru mantras.

    TIA

    :)
  • Dost. You have a good score. Mostly, you will get through the prelims. My suggestion is just stick to the basics of the course outline provided by the upsc and keep practising answer writing. And do not think that 6 months is less time. It has always been about the quality and not the quantity.
  • As we speak, we're left with four months! It definitely is 'possible', and I presume we're all here because we all believe that it's possible. The catch is that you have to be at your best; your absolute best.
