Interview in English-How much proficiency in English required?

Experienced members who faced interview kindly tell whether the interview medium if filled English then is interview carried out in pure and fluent English or whether I can use hinglish(hindi plus english) sort of language?

Comments

  • I've faced UPSC once and UPPSC twice. I never made it to the final merit list anywhere so I don't know how qualified I'm to advise you. But I think hinglish works. Just don't stammer or wince during the switch. Be as normal in Hindi as you were in English.
By the way which interview is going on this time of the year ?
  • Modi type English works.....
  • @pks11630 i will give all the exams from next year and my English speaking is a little bit weak.... i am not that fluent in it....so i was wondering whether it will be wise to invest time on the speaking part?

in states like bengal and orissa you will be rejected outright if you are unable to give interview in fluent english.
in states like up, bihar you can use hindi provided that you use them as pure hindi not as the language used in daily life.

in upsc/other central govt exams a poor impression is created if you are unable to converse in english in interview.
you may not be rejected outright but you will get low marks.

It's curious to know this especially when Bengal and Odisha flaunt sub-nationalism so much so that they fight for grading of regional language as classical and ownership of 'Rashogollas'... But yes, rest of us stand in awe when it comes to the undisputed champion in parading nationalism - Tamil Nadu.

As for the original question @mimansa , I really don't think you need to worry about it mate. I personally know of people who switched back and forth between English and Hindi in their interviews and secured 179 and 168 out of 275 in CSE. 168wala is in IPS and 179wala is in IRS now. I personally got 151 and is trying again. Its the content and structure of your reply, your composure and truthfulness that matters rather than fluent English. People put strong empirical evidence for a hypothesis that moustache and specs add a few extra marks to your score, but I personally am silent on that...
  • You should not get confused in the head like calling destination as destiny etc have clarity of thought. clear meaning of words in head thats it . Avg grammer will do. But clarity of thought is most imp

angrezi achchi hone ka fayda to hota hi hai..isliye isme investment waste nahi jaayega..practice karlo..2-3 mahine me hi sahi ho jaayegi..
  • They are the Interview Board. They don't need you to be master of English, but if you've filled the option of Interview in English language then they expect you to talk in English(basic one with normal and simple words). It is okay if you are unable to get a correct word for something because of nervousness, It's absolutely fine for two-three times but if it's more then they will surely deduct marks thinking you're not much confident in your ability.
Overall an IAS officer is expected to be Jack of all, Master of none. Don't pay much attention on English but try to increase your Vocabulary. Best of Luck and Prepare focused.

If u r not comfortable with english then it's better to choose Hindi (if u r comfortable). Chances r more that they will say u try in english and they will encourage you. In that case marks won't be deducted.
But if u chose english yourself and u r not comfortable with it then u will always feel concerned about your english. It reduces overall impact.
One thing is for quite sure with english as medium if u r not proficient in english then score will be on lower side.

This is based on my 3 encounter with UPSC board of civil service u may agree or may not.
