@Vazu NCERT is good. if you are able to do the old books + new books it will be enough for basic clarity apart from that for basic part India since independence has few chapters. you can refer to any other book but make sure you do your NCERT i'm not doing SC dubey. i'm relying on IGNOU material and my class notes
most important these topics are very dynamic so you need to stay abreast with current affairs. EPW is more than enough for this, only problem is it is too left oriented
also these are sub topics so dont get into too much technicality. concentrate on balanced study

Thanks, to add your comments on EPW, EPW comes up with flaws in almost every method used by government for example Measuring slums in India, Measuring Wetlands in India, etc. So if we raise so many questions against the government we will be out soon.
@vazu yeah, that is the problem too much RED! it donot have neutral points that is why i rely mostly on newspaper article and Frontline. i dont do EPW. 1 magazine every week is too much for me. ~X(
