Weekend Coaching vs Regular Coaching

Hey guys,
I am from Roorkee (Uttarakhand) and I'm preparing for CSE 2014. I recently decided to opt for coaching and have planned on joining a weekend batch because these coachings are already pricey (thanks to the new pattern) so I'll manage to save on the living expenses (i'll be crashing at my aunt's in Punjabi bagh on the weekends). I have stayed in Noida, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore in the past and my experience says it will be less painfull to *burn the midnight oil at my parents' house here in Roorkee. After my extensive research on the internet I found
Rau's - A serious No-no [HAS WEEKEND CLASSES]
Vajiram - their notes are good (which are available on most xerox shops) BUT 300 students in a classroom leaves less time and opportunity for queries and individual attention [NO WEEKEND CLASSES]
Sriram - though notes not as good as Vajiram, still it's got a lot of positive reviews BUT no regular tests and class strength 300 [NO WEEKEND CLASSES]
ALS - most priced, bad reviews, some people even referred them as running a ponzi scheme, so No thanx!! [NO WEEKEND CLASSES]
Khan Study Group - class strength of only 70 students, regular tests, OK to good reviews [HAS WEEKEND CLASSES]

So I have decided that I'll be joining the Khan study group's October Weekend batch. I have heard his CSAT faculty is really good which will be of great help in my back-up plans. Besides the kind of support I want from a coaching is basically regular tests and query solving, and I have read on the forum that both aspects are taken well care of at KSG. Sadly I could not find many reviews of the weekend coaching or even that of KSG. The alternative to this plan would be me shifting to Delhi and joining Sriram's coaching but this would involve another 1-1.5 lakh with the housing, travelling and food.

Plan -1 KSG - WEEKENDS : Sat 5.30-8.30pm, Sun 7am-6pm
Course : G.S (pre+mains) 2014 + CSAT
Fees : 96500 + approx. 1500 p.m. (weekend travel)
Plan - 2 Sriram's - REGULAR : daily 2hrs class
Course : G.S (pre+mains) 2014 + CSAT
Fees : 1,08,000 + approx. 10000 p.m. (living expenses)

Please comment and leave your honest opinions, which of the 2 plans you think I should move forward with along with the pros and cons. Thanks!

see friend, improve your english as I suspect that, you're going to appear in the CSE exams in English medium !

The coaching classes of Delhi are expensive(not pricey, or whatever you have written)

I have not attended any of the above mentioned classes, but if I shall have been in place of you, I shall have stayed in Delhi at any of the places popular for CSE aspirants (without joining any coaching).

I think that my stay at these places would have given me an opportunity to talk to the experienced aspirants, which I think is far more apt(and economical) than joining a weekend coaching(as they[experienced aspirants] might help me regarding tips/preparation/strategy/reviews of coaching).

With the changed pattern of GS, the coaching institutes have lost their shine. The experienced aspirants staying at these places know all the things at par with the teachers of the coaching institutes of Delhi(for GS pre+mains).

You can always opt to take coaching for any of the optional subject.

    hope it helps.

PS: for CSE-2014, these coaching institutes can help you in two ways
    1) optional subject preparation
    2) test series (which I am going to take for mains/ essay writing, strictly not for prelims )

    thanks

I apologize for what i have written about your English, rather, I should analyse my level of command over English language ! :-? :-B
  • @abhithepandey
it's okay, I see you were trying to help me out there. And thanks for your honest take on this.

I'll take your advise and try to talk to these experienced aspirants in the area on weekends.
  • @virat Thankyou! That is my first choice. I hope I'm taking the right decision *fingers crossed*

@t veryone else on the forum : Please leave your opinions or warnings in case you feel I'm making a mistake cuz honestly?? I'm really scared. This is a huge step and I'll be dedicating the next several months of my life to this coaching and putting my entire career at risk.
At times like these I regret quitting my rusty, tiny, pathetic cabin at Accenture. :(

As the timings suggest you don't lose anything in terms of 'hours of coaching'
Just enquire if they are serious in providing weekend coaching.
Also regarding interaction with aspirants you can do that over the weekend as well.(It wont be that helpful in my opinion as most of the aspirants will be self-proclaimed gurus, make full liberal use of the teachers at your coaching instead)
SO if you are comfortable studying at home do that,as it wont really matter if you are in Delhi for an entire week or just on the weekends.(as your requirement mainly being query solving)

Infact i envy you as you get the best of both worlds(Material from Delhi and Comfort of home) :>
  • @VishalJ Thanks! That really helps. I will make sure to check if there is any quality drop in weekend coaching at KSG as compared to their weekday batches.

@Iron_butterfly BROTHER AS I enquired in KSG there are no weekend classes in the october batch.
what are your plans as i too want to join in the weekend classes but unsure where to join now.
  • @Pargi_Bhardwaj umm it's sister, lol. And, Oh God!! Last time I checked they said the weekend batch will commence some time in October. I planned everything accordingly. Guess, I'll have to look for an alternative.
