CSMs till 2015 - Multiple Failure Analysis - SWOT, Mistakes and Trends

We have a dozen threads discussing marks already. This isn't meant to be just about marks. This is specifically for people who have appeared in two or more CSMs and failed to qualify. Let's try and spot trends in our scores and spot weakness. At the end, kindly post your SWOT analysis.

I'll post mine below.

  • dada, i feel its best to rope in few toppers and ask them what they actually wrote in every question of gs papers. We can discuss question by question. I remember gaurav had uploaded his answers, by which many could judge their answers and mistakes. :)
  • 2014 - 541 . prelims ke result ke baad preparation start ki , optional prepare nahi tha , newspaper padha Hi nahi tha , class 12 the ke baad pahli baar essay likha (69 marks mile the ) .
2015 - 606 . prelims hote hi mains ki preparation start kar di .answer writing aur g.s. paper 2,3 par jyada afocus kar diya , utna return nahi mila . essay main improvement hua hain ,118 mila is baar . Optional main 180 last year jitna hi score . Ethics bouncer laga , exam hall main Hi andhera chha gaya tha -75 marks .

Aur jyada padhna , optional improvement .Paper 1,4 main bahut achha scope hain agar achhe se prepare kiya jaye ..

    Appeared in CSMs - 2014 & 2015 - Both NQ

Marks Scored in 2014 & 2015 respectively and analysis:

    1. Qualifying Bengali - 168 & 148
    2. Qualifying English - 124 & 108
    3. Essay - 118 & 112
    4. GS 1 - 65 & 67
    5. GS 2 - 68 & 51
    6. GS 3 - 42 & 64
    7. GS 4 - 91 & 60
    8. Med. Sc. Opional P1 - 108 & 114
    9. Med. Sc. Optional P2 - 75 & 85

    Written total - 567 & 553

    GS total - 316 & 242

    GS+Essay total - 434 & 354

    Optional total - 183 & 199

    Trends spotted and inference :

    (i) Indian language marks are way higher than English, even though my entire schooling has been in English medium. I'm prone to writing sentences that are too long and complicated. I guess, some of them are ending up not making sense due to some inadvertent error because I'm not getting the time to revise them well. Or maybe they're too complicated and jargonated to be of 'generalist' value. This could also be because of bad English handwriting, which is certainly a problem for me.

(ii) Essay marks remain mediocre. I have a tendency of writing reflective essays. I use bullet points. I avoid examples, facts and figures. My points are possibly too average.

(iii) GS 1 has held more-or-less steady. But scores are too mediocre to pass mains.

(iv) GS 2 has worsened. This I can excuse as it was a pretty rough day. But scores are too mediocre to pass mains.

    (v) GS 3 has improved. But scores are too mediocre to pass mains.

(vi) GS 4 has dropped significantly. This seems to be a general trend this year. But scores are too mediocre to pass mains.

(vii) Optional P1 has been borderline mediocre this year, in spite of marginal improvement. Need a lot more work.

(viii) Optional P2 has been almost as pathetic this year as last year, in spite of marginal improvement. Need a lot more work here. This is proving to be a part of my Achilles heel.

(ix) GS+Essay as a whole has fallen by a whopping 80 marks. This part is killing me. It's a part of my Achilles heel.

    (x) MS is a scoring optional. My scores have improved marginally but I'm still below 200. This is unacceptably poor.

    SWOT :

    Strengths - NIL

    Weakness - GS+Essay as a whole

Opportunities - GS 1, GS 3, GS 4, Essay, Med. Sc as a whole.

Threats - Optional P2 (opportunity cost) > GS 4 (opportunity cost) > GS 2 (perpetual problem) > GS 3 (unpredictable) > Essay (opportunity cost) > GS 1 (opportunity cost)

Focus areas identified in order of priority :

    1. Med. Sc. Optional P2 > P1
    2. GS 4
    3. GS 2
    4. GS 3
    5. Essay
    6. GS 1

Post yours so we can find general trends of the exam as a whole. That would help us sort our priorities better.

Yehi subjectivity ke liye kafi log suffer karte hain. All the best for PG.
Etat Dada tu unethical ho gaya hai ;).
    GS 4 - 91 & 60

  • ^^ Nice summary of points. Video acchi hai.
  • ^^ Nice summary of points. Video acchi hai.
There must be other parts of video dealing wid GS 1 to GS 4 ?
I didn't find any in the list on the right on YouTube. See if you can find. Kindly share if you do. :)
  • SWOT twice. First immediately after the exam before the marks are revealed and forget about it.
    Then repeat after getting marks.
The latter is akin to a witch-hunt, deliberately finding flaws where there may exist none, generally.
Work on both lists. Focus on the former though.
