  • it depends wat u want in your life..for instance cse-2014 rank 311 joined rbi grade-b..similarly cse-2012 rank 143 preferred rbi over cse...in rbi 2015 batch 5 people who qualified cse-2014 with some ranks preferred rbi.
  • I am a Grade B in RBI and jst to clear the air, even IAAS over Grade B. However, RBI is quite friendly towards Civils aspirants, so one may continue preparation while being in service.
    Hi,

Thanks for commenting here... Can you shed us more light on the profile of Grade B? What you like about it and what you dont? Some insider view which hasnt been discussed here perhaps?

Also, which dept are you in? Which RO? Hows the work culture, work-life balance, accommodation etc. :)

That way, we will have more knowledge about the job and also increases our awareness.
  • There is simply no comparison, except some isolated cases of IRS leaving for RBI and viceversa or even leaving RBI for ITI,IRS is clearly ahead of RBI.
IRS carries much more recognition and prestige and that is the single most important criteria.Salary and perks are meaningless.RBI grade B,though a good service, can be put only over the bottom 5-7 services of UPSC.It can be prefered by some isolated individuals intrestred in research or banking but for normal aspirant, there is simply no comparison.
Just look at the level of competition, you have IIM-A,B,C,L,Harvard grads leaving their fat pay cheques for UPSC.Because money is not important to them, but public service, prestige etc is.
@Jon_Snow,RBI was directly recruiting from IIM's!Thats shows how easy it was to get into RBI

Bhai going by your comments... it seems ki you have made up your mind to quit cse preparation if you would get RBI grade B and you are just trying to find reasons from others and getting yourself confirmed that you are taking right step.

The reality is that RBI grade B is indeed a very good job on its own..... but if you say that it is better than all the group A service of cse than you are sadly mistaken.......apart from additional perks of group a....the biggest difference lies in the social reputation of both the services....... any one clearing cse are hailed as heroes in their social circle....however RBI grade B does not enjoy that reputation...... it does not mean that this RBI job is a bad job....it is awesome, but in terms of social reputation it is no where near any of the sevice of cse....comparing it with IRS is out of question.
  • Apart from higher prestige and social recognition, in which aspects the IRS scores above grade B?

Guys, imagine I am an introvert and I don't really need all that social recognition from your relatives and friends..

It will anyways fade away after a few months. And half the praise that you get is fake or full of jealousy.. The other half would do it because they would expect favours from you. What I am more worried about are the following longer term things -

    a) Work Profile - The job that I am doing should be meaningful in the broader perspective and it should have an impact on the society. (Not just one or two persons, but on the community as such). People need not come and thank me or salute me or fall on my feet, but I need internal mental satisfaction. After I come out of the office at the end of the day, I should feel good about myself that it was a very productive day, and India is a better place thanks to the work I did today.

    b) Personal Life - Will I be able to spend time with my wife and kids. Go to movies, go on dinner dates and on small vacations. Or weekend get-outs.

    c) A good working environment which would intellectually stimulate me, with similarly knowledged peers with whom I can have good conversations and debates.

    d) Social respect without going overboard. No need to celebrate me, but can genuinely respect me.

In such cases, IRS or RBI?
  • Hi All,

I have given three attempts till now for the Civil Services Examination.

    1st Attempt - Failed Interview. (2013)
    2nd Attempt - Failed Mains. (2014)
    3rd Attempt - Failed Prelims. (2015)

Also, yesterday I gave the RBI Grade B Interview, which was decent.

Now, I know that IAS > IFS > IPS > IRS > RBI Gr B > Other Group A Services.

Also, in the Medical board of UPSC, they said that I have partial colour blindness, so Im not eligible for any of the Uniformed posts, like IPS, IRTS, RPF etc. And I dont have any interest in IFS.

So, my doubt is, if I clear the RBI Gr B interview by mistake also, should I still prepare for Civil Services?

At the end of the day, it is IAS > IRS > Grade B.

And I have been studying so hard for the past 3 years that now Im sure getting in the Top 100 ranks with a good cadre for IAS would be impossible... Whereas getting in the Top 500 might still be possible. So I am removing IAS as an option.

The dilemma is between these two. IRS and RBI Gr B.

Should I study day and night for the next one year and try to get IRS? Or should I just concentrate on the training and career growth in RBI Gr B (If I clear it, optimistically, hopefully)

I had made a list of Pros and Cons, but I would like to have a better informed decision from this forum.

    1. IRS has lots of political interference, whereas RBI has none. (Except at the Governor stage :P)
    2. RBI is an amazing 5-day 9 to 5 peaceful job, with lots of family time, and a good work-life balance. IRS is very hectic.
    3. RBI is in only the Capital cities of the country, and IRS is cadre based. Stuck in one state.
    4. IRS has more power, social status and respect, while RBI has zero clout.
    5. IRS pays more, has more perks than RBI.
    6. IRS is a part of the Fiscal policy, RBI takes care of the Monetary Policy.
    7. IRS works according to the whims and fancies of the Govt in power, may need to ass-lick seniors, has the usual contacts-based promotions.. RBI is autonomous.
    8. RBI is specialization based. Whole life same organization. IRS varies from taxation dept till customs etc. More generalist.

    Now, help me.

Should I sit and study for the next one year to get IRS or Ill happily work without any exam tensions for RBI? (If I clear it)

    IRS or RBI?

Let me answer all your doubts one by one. (Though I am no expert)
    1. Political Interference. Nothing. If you are honest, you need not bother about the politicians. Even there is a well laid transfer policy and cannot be subject to any sort of influence.
    2. Work-Life Balance. 10 to 6 job. Weekends off and you get the national holidays as well.
    3. Posting. Have a look on http://www.cbec.gov.in/resources/htdocs-cbec/transfer_ord/transfer-policy08.pdf They all are major cities (except the "C" cities).
    4,5,6. You are right.
    7. Promotions. Read 1.
    8. Specialization. IRS is very diversified, which in itself is fun.

Bro. For your point a,c,d (impact on society, enviornment, knowledgable peers, respect).....you yourself know which is the better service.....

As far as point b i.e. personal life is concerned..... that you can confirm from in -service people about it.....

  • Apart from higher prestige and social recognition, in which aspects the IRS scores above grade B?
Both jobs are good an at par with each other if u remove those two "factors"
Bakki ur choice wat u want from ur career so I don't think in any point u or anyone should compare coz compare se IAS bhi accha nhi lagega
So it's a fruitless effort anyways just my personal opinion :-)
  • The cumulative opinion so far keeps IRS a bit above Grade B.
