IR being consistent high scoring portion of paper 2 ( min 100 marks with high high potential of scoring) , i think it will be proper for us to discuss Happenings in international arena starting january 2016 to november 2016.
causes of simmering tension between iran n saudi arabia
1 sectarian reasons( shia n sunni)
2 backing of diff regimes in gulf( bahrain govt- saudi, rebels :shia , yeman rebal shia, syrian rebels shia)
3 lack of freedom of minority sects in both the counrtries
4 islamic clerics in iran are traditionally anti US thus they are anti saudi which is considered lynchpin of american strategy in Gulf
5 Backing of iraq by suadi in eighties iraq iran war led to initial deterioration between two countries
6 saudi practices conservative form of sunni islam and is increasingly asserting it self as guardian of sunni muslims while iran plays the same role for shia muslims..thus this leads to conflict in countries where both sects are present and govt being unstable
^^^ Wrt point 4 - a subtle shift can be seen in us going away a bit frm saudi nd a liitle tilt of us towards iran (to contain isis). How would u factor that ?
I think sectarian divide and quest for regional supremacy are the prime reasons for the perpetual tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Add the US angle and it just adds fuel to the fire.
^^^ Wrt point 4 - a subtle shift can be seen in us going away a bit frm saudi nd a liitle tilt of us towards iran (to contain isis). How would u factor that ?
USA's position towards Iran, though softened, does not mean a tilt. Apart from Israel, Saudi Arabia is the most important regional partner for USA in West Asia. Even though Saudi Arabia's importance for USA might decline in the future with USA becoming self sufficient in oil, Saudi Arabia's size, stability and historic ties with USA would prevent any dramatic shifts in US foreign policy.
2. Simmering tension between iran and saudi arabia ( in wake of hanging of shiat cleric, storming of saudi embassy etc)
2).conflict of intrst.national intrst goes beyond shyia vs sunni.particularly economic intrst.i.e. ek to economic downturn upar se arctic melting n shell gas→phir P5+1 n Iran deal →too many suppliers→khatra For Oil shikhdoms
