Non-UPSC | Insomnia | Suggestions/ Opinion / Views

edited May 2013 in Miscellaneous
Since last few days, every 2nd/3rd day, I become insomniac. Lol. I have been trying to maintain my sleep-cycle, maintain reasonable food habits (no drinking, inter-alia) and go running/jogging. However, irrespective of all that, I loose my sleep/amn't able to sleep properly.

I have a pretty comfortable room and usually face no disturbance. I have been pondering over this, as it leads to wastage of time and increases anxiety/tension. I was wondering if others too have faced/face similar situations. I was looking for some advice/ suggestion/ opinion/ anything :)

Apologies for posting something irrelevant to the exam. I been up lot many nights and envy my ForumIAS friends who are enjoying sound sleep :P (Assumption based on absence of actitvity) Anyways folks, have a good day! Me, lets see! :(

@fallen_leaves Hey i've had this problem quite a bit over the last couple of years in fact! The reason as you say is definitely anxiety! But i used to have this problem mostly on days when i didn't study well enough. Studying hard throughout the day tends to make me completely exhausted. And sound sleep follows. You also mention that you go for a jog. I'd suggest that you extend the jogging a bit and put in an extra hour or two more than your normal. I know that isn't easy especially if you're already studying a lot. But then the sleep after that is soo deep and sound man! Totally worth it :)
  • thanks @fallen_leaves for sharing this. i thought only i was in a situation like this. but my condition is a little different given that i sleep a lot now. nearly 10-12hrs. but hte anxiety level never dies. every moment or two i pop up (like the popcorns) and feel like looking at the book. but what i end up doing is just staring at it(not even reading it) then i panic. which eventually makes me fall asleep => more panic and anxiety.

all i want to do currently is eat and eat and sleep. :(
  • You need melatonin. Your rhythm has been disturbed, suggest you see a doctor and ask him to prescribe melatonin. It's sold as agoprex. I never used to sleep at night for some 3 years cos of a guy who dumped me who got married to his cousin recently.I finally saw a doc heprescribed me agoprex I'm sleeping at night finally . Do see immediately. Don't waste time and life due to sleeplessness which leads to unproductivity.

i sleep a lot nearly 12 hours.how to reduce that? i was taking exbax but it didnt help much and led to restlessness.
  • Too much sleep Ian snow Indication of depression. You might want to take some medication before you go into zombie state.
  • @eric
you don't need meds for oversleeping
    you need motivation

real dreams don't let you sleep

every second wasted is the opportunity lost to become the person you wanna be

though unrelated, the message can be applied from here

and if you are unable to sleep cause of some medical condition, then i apologise

I went through something similar - oversleep and undersleep
Then I found this relaxant called Tagara - it is ayurvedic (Himalaya Product. Also has additional benefits for one's stomach.) - it got my sleep to 6 hours dot, not a minute more not a minute less. That's how I fixed my sleep cycle - I was suggested this by a doctor. I'm not prescribing anything here. Just sharing experience.

So whenever I get into a bad zone, I just take 1 capsule for 7 days to get a little push.

Not drinking too much tea and coffee also helps.
  • Do some workout.

Rise early by 6am and don't sleep during day.

No electronic gadgets after 9pm. No phones, laptops, ipads (most necessary)

    you will be fine.

@Fallen_Leaves - It is a good thing! You have more time to prepare. :D

On a serious note - Try reading history or IYB before you go to sleep. IYB serves as a pillow too. ;)

Thanks for initiating the discussion. Same problem here, if not worse.
And thank you people for those valuable suggestions. Man, this is what I love the most about this forum. So many helping hands. :)>-
