Ocean as a carbon sink and acidification

When carbon sink (CO2) in the ocean it interacts with water and produce H2CO3, which again dissociates to form hydrogen ion and Bi-carbonate ion. But i heard bicarbonate ions are basic/alkaline in nature. As we do take them when we suffer from acidity or indigestion for e.g. sodium bicarbonate etc. Hydrogen n bicarbonate cancels out each other isn't it? or it's like bicarbonate dissociates further? Do drop in comments.

Comments

  • CO2 + H2O = H+ + HCO3-

Bicarbonate ion is weakly basic. Hydrogen ion is strongly acidic. Net result is an acidic solution.

N.B. This is not the same thing as titration where equal amounts of bases and acids produce a neutral solution. Here the number is trumped by their relative strength. For the same reason, NaOH solution is basic.
