Hindu Notes?

What is the best way of making notes of The Hindu? It usually takes me 3-4 hours to complete The Hindu everyday, thereby making me very anxious about the preparation level as it takes a lot of time out of my daily schedule.
If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut....!!!

  • 3 to 4 hours are too much... First try to complete it in 1 hour.. Or at max 1.30 hours. Then think of note making.
  • If you have just started your preparation and your base of current affairs is not so strong than initially you may take 3-4 hours. But in a month or so you will gradually increase your speed as you will be aware of background of most of the news.

Just try to introspect after reading a newspaper that which kind of reading you should not have done. Like you may have tendency to read every article of sports section, other unnecessary local or political news. Politician's not so informative/general views on a particluar topic. etc. And you will soon realise that you dont have to read all the articles.

If you have read a good article on a particular topic and made tones out of it than no need to read all the upcoming articles on the same topic. Just skim through it in 1-2 minute and if you find something new or interesting than add that into your note.

You will also be able to identify good journalists who write so well that it covers a topic comprehensively and there are not so good journalists/guest writers etc who may not be that good.

Just keep doing it consistently and soon you will find your way.

Another thing that can help you is to ask a senior to guide you. If you can find a person who has appeared for mains and interview and makes good notes than it will be easy for you. Just be with him and observe how to finish it within 1-1.5 hours. How to make notes and how to use some odd facts and quotes.
Always keep an eye on the clock so it will push you to read quickly.

Some articles you may have to read slowly, some requires just skimming, sometimes only headline is enough, and some artilces you have to leave just after reading few words.
  • One more thing.. if you have just started prep. Than take the print out of syllbus and just go through it daily for few days so you will know which news is relevant for our exam and where to write in our notes. + Go through previous 5 years question papers so you will know what kind of prep. Is required and how your notes should be.
