Economics Optional Doubt!

Hey guys!
New here.

I was thinking whether to take economics as an optional or not.

Background - Commerce
Marks in 12th economics - 97 (CBSE)
Pursuing B.com (h) with Economics elective from DU.
Till now, havent found any issue in graduation

Will be appearing in CSM 2020.

Paper 2 just by looking seems familiar.
Completely clueless about paper-1 though

Is paper -1 really tough?

So, should i opt it or go for other "Easier" ones.

P.s. Economics in 11th and 12th was a piece of cake.
Is it anything like that or way above?

  • deciding on taking economics as an optional by ur 12th experience is same as deciding how to hit a century in t20 world cup bu ur gully cricket exp.
    1. eco paper 1 is very demanding. untill or unless you hav absolute command over concepts forget about getting good marks.
    2. paper looks easy untill u hav to write it in d exam.
    3. finishing paper is a big deal.
    4. expectations of evaluators looms large in this optional
    5. there are millions of concepts and theories and every year u will get 3-4 bouncers for sure.
    6. questions are very confusing and once u interpret it wrong, u will get zero marks.
    7. no coaching or test series (vajiram offers one but not up to d mark)
    some pro's
    1. if you are good and hav a command economics alone will take u to top 100 list
    2. it is a very intresting optional , u will never get bored.
overall take this optional if you are good with your writing skills and maths, also better if you enroll yourself in a masters course in economics. DU economics (h) sullabus is d key.. complete it before u attempt civil services. and whenver u attempt write as many answers as u can.

    Thanks man!

    Appreciate it.

On the other hand, what other optional subjects do you recommend?
  • Hi, I suggest against economics.
Class 11 & 12 are nothing like the economics done in college - max 2 months worth. BCom based economics has a very superficial coverage of the topics. You will be at a significant disadvantage vis-a-vis people who have a background.

Paper 2 looks simple but it isnt. You are expected to have the opinion of a specialist and interlink things. It requires far more effort if you want proper marks in this paper.

Paper 1 is quite vast but actually easy. There are many outdated topics as well which means plodding through Indian authors.

As for optional, why arent you opting for your own subject?

I actually dont get Accounts. It requires like too much mugging up which isnt my cup of tea.

Eco Paper 2 is full of mugging, that too opinions and numbers. Cant write like GS eco. What about something like sociology? The syllabus is small.
  • Considering it now.

Do you know any other "conceptual" optionals?

Good thing is I have ample time to decide.

So just dont wanna hurry into selecting a "tough" optional and regret later.

It's a very good Optional . Go ahead with it . 2012 & 2013 Toppers had Economics Optional . All the best :)
  • thanks guys! decided to go for Sociology optional for now.
  • You can refer to Abhimanyu Gahlaut's blog for information about resources and so that you have a little insight about how much you need to read for paper 1.

    Hope that helps.
  • Take economics optional if you can spend a considerable amount of time on it. Paper 1 is lengthy as well as requires studying from varied sources. Questions can still come from the books which you haven't read.

You can also take economics as optional if you want to pursue a masters in it later on which would give you a good backup as well. Take a final call based on a long term plan as a specialisation in economics would give you a lot of options in future.

But the doors are always open for taking other optionals which depends on your interest and the amount of time you have
  • I have decided now not to take economics as optional.
    Spent considerable time on thinking.
Not chosen anyone as of now.

Btw, where can i sell these book?
I have completely new books for the eco optional (almost all as suggested by Gaurav+Himanshu sir)

    Does anybody have a clue?

You can sell it online. Many such websites are there.

    Can try on Amazon too.

Or go to Old Delhi and negotiate well.

  • Mind naming some 'Authentic websites'?

    How hassle-free is Amazon?

Where in Old Delhi? Chandni Chowk - Chawri Bazar?

Congrats! That's one of the toughest decisions aspirants have to make if they are picking up a non-gradution subject optional. You did it. All the best bhai. :+1:
