This question was asked last year in gs paper 1.

Distinguish between religiousness/religiosity and communalism giving one example of how the former has got transformed into the latter in independent India.

Example bhi maang raha, that too after independence ka. :D

But to be fair, upsc ne ek essay bhi pucha tha “Policy Paralysis” pe, jab congress power mein thi and widespread allegations lag rahe the UPA2 pe policy paralysis ke.

Conclusion: UPSC is not influenced by government of the day in matters of question framing.

Anyone who quoted RSS there would be in for a rude shock. As much as I personally despise Sanghis, in UPSC you have to be impersonal and fact-based. And according to facts, RSS is not legally convicted of being a communal danger yet. Therefore that would not be a good example

The only example that fits the question is Bhindranwale's Akali Dal and the Khalistan movement.

It's incidental to the issue of nationalism, national identity, essay topics about these as also for interview questions.
For example if you look into the meaning of unity in diversity, RSS's view is instrumental in exploring that with religio-cultural identity as the basis of unity. Is communalism inherently bad, can it be avoided against a popular notion of ummah pervading thru one section or similar religious notion for any other community. Does non-Hindu identity nurtures anti-national view more so than Hindu identity or heritage, or atleast favors centrifugal tendencies as at some palces in north-east or Kerala or maoism-affected areas.

Can one's identity be independent of one's surroundings. The meaning of individualism, as well as your group identity. Does an individual define himself/herself - or are you defined by observer's gaze. You can here take a view on Adi Shankar and how he conciliated numerous religious traditions.

Moving on to national identity - was India born in 1947? the concept of civilisation, and civilsational nationalism. A comparison with china who call themselves a middle kingdom, emphasising a continuity marred by a blip of century of humiliation. Infact this view is bought by foreign viewers and analysts of china as well. Can such a common national idnetity arise in india, will we define how world sees us or will we continue to be defined by foreigner's perspective?

Then there is the thing about constitution and its appropriateness or challenges in not being rooted in Indian tradition. There is the issue of equality and rights - very mainstream ideas - which you can explore from a non-conformist angle. But this has more to do with general political right than just RSS. The meaning of secularism. Is dharm same as religion? Dharm as rule-of-law. Situating indian lawas and rules,a nd modern public customs in Indian traditions. The consitution and its structre thus being non-democractic for not being of Indian tradition. Tradition as the democratic voice of generations gone by. It can be one of many input points to making your views on many questions.

So in short, taking a view on or through RSS, you can add value to Essay, GS-1, GS-2, GS-3, GS-4.

but if you have just started with your prepartion. don't delve into this. You will most likely get no to low returns.
