    From my limited knowledge,
    Required books for geology:-
    A Textbook Of Geology - P K Mukherjee
Principles Of Engineering Geology - K M Bangar
(These two books are for preliminary understanding of the subject ,also cover some topics very well) + Brilliant's material (a must have for topics mentioned below along with the books) + A Geology Dictionary
    Topicwise books:-
General Geology- A Textbook Of Physical Geology(G B Mahapatra)
Geomorphology - Any Physical Geography book (Geomorphology part),e.g, Savindra Singh
    Remote sensing,GIS,Areal Photography - Brilliant + Internet
Structural Geology - Structural Geology (Marland P Billings)
Palaeontology - No book covers entire syllabus of UPSC.Only Brilliant covers all.If you want to study book, then you can try this - A Textbook Of Palaeontology (M S Chatwal)
    Indian Stratigraphy - (i)Geology Of India & Burma (M S Krishnan)
(ii)Fundamentals Of Historical Geology And Stratigraphy Of India (Ravindra Kumar)
Hydrology - Groundwater Hydrology (David Keith Todd)
    Mineralogy - (i)Rutley's Elements of Mineralogy(Gribble)
    (ii)Dana's Textbook of Mineralogy (Ford)
    Petrology - (i)Principles of Petrology(G W Tyrrel)
    (ii)Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology(Myron G Best)
    (iii)Sedimentary Rocks(Pettijohn)/Introduction to Sedimentology(Sengupta)
Economic Geology - Economic Geology(U Prasad)
Mining Geology - Brilliant + Internet
Environmental Geology & Geochemistry - Brilliant + Internet

Exhaustive booklist for complete and in-depth understanding of the subject.Brilliant's notes are sufficient but books are needed to deal with the unpredictable nature of UPSC.

  • @Russanx Dear sir, i am yet to graduate and i am in last semester of my civil engineering. Though i don't have much base in geology but i have studied structural geology in my engineering and found it to be interesting. Can you please tell me if it is possible via self study? I will be giving my attempt in 2016. I have 18 months roughly. You think this much time is enough for me to get the sub command as upsc demands. Your response will be highly appreciated.

18 months is sufficient to prepare Geology if you prepare full time. Definitely Geology can be prepared by self study but at the initial stage of preparation, understanding terminologies may be difficult.Try good Geology Dictionary/Internet for that.Structural Geology is one of the difficult parts of Geology, as you have already studied that, you have an advantage. All the best.

  • I also took geology. I have the basic reference books. But i did something different.

I took the syllabus and searched on youtube for lessons. I food some good lessons which gave me an idea of the subject. I found some of the following channels helpful :
    1. .Cathina L Gunn de Rosas DFW [PhD holder + awesome voice]
    2. Worldthq
(not posting links since its my first post)

Also i visited Bangalore university and met a professor who gave me some notes of the students. Maybe u could try at your local government university.
I saw the sample material from EvolutionIAS, but i felt that it was not enough. The material was for IFoS Geology.

    Google "TTC Geology Videos"

its a good introduction to geology if people want to learn more before going deeper in the subject

  • @ratamahatta Keeping the same optional i.e. Geology for CSE-15? Also how are you planning to go ahead wrt preparing the optional?
    ·
  • @FSAspirant i got some of the reference books from flipkart. Other than that youtube channels of worldethq for paper 2. Paper 1 is pretty straight forward. I am finding statigraphy of India and structural geology hard.

Other chapters are a combination of Geology, Geography, Physics , Chemistry and Biology. And of course , common sense.
