  • How many people here have physics as optional ?
All good things are wild and free
  • Are vajpayee's notes available online?
  • abhijeet agrawal' s blog has good compilation of notes plus problems : http://abhijeetagrawal.blogspot.in/2012/03/new-addition-of-notes-books-of-physics.html

ps : though the humongous amount of references mentioned by him not for weak hearts . :P

  • Hope all have dias tutorial sheets. Can directly quote question no. from there, in case of doubts.
  • People, where are you doing superconductors from, and in how much detail? I havent done this topic before, so its giving me some trouble. A wide range of questions have been asked. My take, it should be done superficially from a 10 marker point of view. Can someone please enlist the topics to be covered, and possibly the source?

Most people leave it. I have done basic Boolean part, gates and K-maps etc.
I don't find it worth doing as ROI is very low. Also I had tough time last year to revise everything in one day.
So I would recommend to do only those topics which you are already familiar with. Leave the rest and use the options available in the paper.

i am enlisting topics to be done in superconductivity . Most of them are straight forward and no need to refer any book , just search for ' introductory superconductivity ' on net and go through topics. As @image_1 said this is bad roi if you spend more than three- four days on it . After searching and going through the topics just solve previous year questions which are mostly formula substitution or qualitative explanation like 'what is the difference between " etc ( seven- eight questions in 15 years ,though in recent times expect at least one question)

    1. properties of superonductor:
    a. Critical temp
    b.persistent current
    c. thermoelectric properties
    d. magnetic properties (perfect diamagnetism) ( little bit of qualitative detail) Meissener efffect
    e Specific heat

    2. difference between type 1 and type 2 SC and examples

3.some theoretical models explaining above properties
    a. London equation
b.qualitative BCS theory (not mathematical model, just approach and consequence)

    4. Other observed properties
    a. Supercurrent tunneling : Josephson tunneling and applications (SQUID )
b.Flux quantization (extra, may skip it)

5.high temp superconductors : just examples and a bit of idea about how it is different from normal (this is new topic so theory aspect will not come) :-B

Thanks ! I already downloaded from there. I was looking for an updated list or else we can update that list ?

  • sure. i am presently solving optics part will try to put up questions relating to them . you can do the same for other parts. @image_1

@scoobydoo Ok then, I will start with mechanics. will upload them soon.

Try this for optics and mechanics. Only because i did these a while ago, so managed this silly business. I dont have for other units.
  • Sorry em and optics.
  • Caltech has made all three volumes of The Feynman Lectures On Physics available for free online reading.

Sorry to gatecrash, but just read this in the news and thought it might be useful to you guys for your optional. :)

    Thanks though.

will be joining from 14th . this weekend is mechanics and next to it is optics . venue should probably be his classroom at jia sarai. i am not sure though . you can call the number mentioned on the website for confirming this.

@scoobydoo I just called DIAS. This weekend is "Full Length Paper II", after that Mechanics and then Optics. The venue is Rajendra Nagar centre.

This weekend will be the 4th test. QM, Atomic & Molecular, and Solid State already over.
  • @all guys any idea about PHOTON IAS physics test series?
Today I called them their test series will b starting from 12th sept Fees 10000

BTW today I went to Jia sarai DIAS ..they r claiming that for becoming IAS with physics optional u have to join DIAS n vajpayee sir is worlds best teacher in physics..so I decided not to join DIAS.

Thanks . will try to finish mechanics by then though i am still doing optics . way behind schedule. will try to catch up.

not heard of photon . but i think dias test series would be better choice . It is like aits of fiitjee we used to give in iit jee times , almost evry serious and top cream give it . So a good way to know your position in the competition and work on your improvement .

i doubt it will be available in any shop as the physics crowd is hardly significant so no demand. But i feel it will not be of much help as the main advantage as i have mentioned earlier is mainly measure of ones position in the physics crowd . Do try to give any test which is available at your place or is available online/correspondence . can talk to dias or as vikalp mentioned photon ias , whether they provide onine/correspondence facility.

  • @image, i'll not be able to take the test series either. Do you think that we can do a test from either abhijeet's notes or do full length tests from a previous paper. But the trouble is, we may not do the same topics at a time. Moreover i cover topics randomly from different units (to ward off the pressure).
A possible solution is as i said a full length test paper wise, on a fixed date. But that shall be about 2 months for now. We can then give each other feedback on answers.
For practice you can pick papers from abhijeets notes, as i mentioned. They are mostly previous year questions.
  • @shaggy123 @image guys if you can fix a schedule of topics maybe even i can rope in on feedback and discussion , though i am definitely going to give test series . whatssay ? my schedule being optics by this weekend and mechanics in further 10 days.

  • @scoobydoo, unlikely the scedules would match. I am doing paper 2. And @ image as he mentioned was doing mechanics. May be the two of you could. Or we could keep sharing our schedules, in case they ever happen to match.

ohk .no problem . maybe we can wait for a month to finish off major portions. By the way do post even doubts and question on this platform. it will help keeping us on toes .

Matching the schedules will be difficult but it doesn't matter. We can solve the questions and share our doubts.
Our target should be to solve -
    1. all prev. year questions (at least last 10 years if not all)
    2. Abhijeet's notes questions / DIAS sheets
I feel if we do these we will sail through.
