[CSM] Zoology Optional Discussions

Aim: Group discussions, suggestions, answer writing practice, notes sharing, books, strategy etc... (whatever that would help us to get 300+ in this paper this year)

Hey guys! :D

I couldn't find any thread anywhere on the internet to bring people with zoology optional together.

Zoology is an unconventional subject but this year's mains topper Rishi Raj (AIR-3) had zoology as the optional. Let's do it this year too 8->
This is the right time to start because we have less than 100 days left for mains and zoology has really vast syllabus.

About me: This is my second attempt, last year I scored pretty well in zoology (120+90=210) with preparation of just one month and attempted 350 and that too very average answer. This shows the potential this subject has. So, I am pretty sure that we can do it

Let's begin... B-)

it's Rachit Raj not rishi raj.. :-j
  • Is it fine to start from evolution notes or need to go through each and every book suggested at various sites....
  • hi i m also taking zoology as my optional . but dono which books to follow which coaching material to get please help me ( nocturnal and fakir hi )
  • Gud start by nocturnal im too zoology asp.as far ad prep strategy for zoology is concerned u have to.flow zoology in urs blood and have to attain saturation stage in order to store exceptionally high marks.i m a doctor choose zoology despite of having offered pubad n geography but i know tht optional has its own tension ie "scaling "but our zoology is far away from it as a result of whch people get exceptionally high marks in p1and p2.in zoology one mst have gud command over drawing freehand diagram n flowchart which u can learned only in coaching like evolution ias
"revision is just like a paan leaves
if it wudn't be turned continously it wud have rotten

similarly... if the revision has n't been done repeatedly it wud have forgotten".

  • Nocturnal 90 at present where.u r in delhi?
"revision is just like a paan leaves
if it wudn't be turned continously it wud have rotten

similarly... if the revision has n't been done repeatedly it wud have forgotten".

  • Noc 90 u r rght even with average answer n fair knowledge of drawing diagram n flowchart we can score pretty high because hahaha we r far away frm scaling due our marks is nt deducted unnecessary in order to achieve balance with other subj n we score sufficiently high.thats the importance of zoology.so u all r required to demotivate other nt to choose zoology for blablabla reason.

I shifted to Delhi last week, just to join Evolution's test series. But don't know why are they delaying it. Since the syllabus is so vast and it will need atleast three to four times revisions before the mains exam, this is the only reason for opting for the test series. Otherwise i personally do not feel this subject needs any coaching because people opting for it are already atleast graduates in the related life sciences subjects. Love for the subject and liking making colored diagrams- This is why I opted for the subject. Less fear of scaling or butchering are the added advantages. ;-)
From where are you preparing for it? What is your strategy?

    Hi!
I don't know about the coaching material. For paper 2 I am using my graduation notes and books. For paper 1, kotpal series for taxonomy, ignou material for ecology, internet and other books for remaining topics.
I can mail you few ebooks. Give me your id.
you can also google mrunal's page where strategy for zoology preparation is very well written and booklist is also provided

  • Hi lots of students who opt for zoology lives like hibernating bear with full of loneliness, beacause there is a misconceptions in there mind that it is too tough to handle, long syllabus blabla.
2-i agreed tht terminology used in zoology is tough to.someone wch renders them to opt it.
3-due less participation of candidates in zoology make it a nobel or immuned subject ie it is not butchered or scaled down inorder to make balance with other opt.
4-in 2012 stuti charan who opt for botany get exceptional unbeatable marks in p1 ie 247/300 why due least participation wch i thnk only 10 due wch she is upscaled even least marks in botany or zoology is abt 110 roughly may be more.stuti mam ko bhi confidence nahi tha ki how she get tht much marks as he said.
5-now the books i m listing is fully sufficient n no look further beacause there is lots of books like DE robertis/cb powar for cellbio.which i considered totally waste of time. PAPER 1-
*Non-chordate:RL kotpal(indian version) is sufficient bt dont go for ruppert n barnes.
*Chordate n comparative anatomy:vertebrate:kotpal, harvey pough and gc kent, these r three different books all r essential to refer.
    *ecology n environment:1- pd sharma,2-ps verma n vk Aggarwal(schand)+Internet.
    *economic zoology:1-shukla n upadhay,2-preventive n social medicine by parks +Internet.
*instrumentation method:1-practical biochemistry by wilson n walker+ Internet.
*ethology: by reena mathur,bt animal behavior book by TMH is too gud.+Internet.
    *biostatistics:satguru prasad.
    PAPER 2-
*Cellbiology: 1-gerald karp(edition 5),2-cellbio by ps verma n vk Aggarwal is more than sufficient.
*genetics, molecular bio:1-principles of genetics by klug n Cummings (edition 8 or 9),2-genetics by ps verma n vk Aggarwal is enough.
    *evolution:ps verma n vk Aggarwal is sufficient+Internet.
    *physiology n biochemistry:medical physiology by A guton(edition 11),biochemistry by harper.
*embryology:1-chordate embryology by ps verma n vk Aggarwal, development biology by gilbert (edition 9)bt costly.

  • Thanks LBSNAA .my confusion is evolution is essential or not....and 2013 paper is somewhat different from previous...can we tackle with above material gross understanding....
  • @i_can you can !! ;)

On a serious note trying to cover 100% syllabus is counterproductive as thn it wd b at the cost of other subjects( gs) abt coaching I can't say anything cause I have not taken. it is not required if u r comfortable with the subject. The syllabus is too vast even compared to other sc subjects. So dont worry about peripheral matters and focus on preparing ( if u r writing 2014 mains) else wait till Dec for a comprehensive strategy ;)
  • Thanks unoO1....I am heading towards 2015...if u r writing this tym...best luck....if possible put up things according to syllabus bit and its strategy...so it will b again easier to head on...books above already mentioned by LBSNAA...thanks again as its difficult to find out zoo aspirant....only Delhi is option but not possible for all....please make things again easy as like other options by sharing as much as possible...we will make zoo very comfortable to all future aspirants
  • Bus i hope zoology n other opt is nt going to scrap in 2015,phode dunga saala exam.always remember giving 100% in first attempt is far better than giving 25-25% in four consecutive attempts.

They won't be doing that because most probably they will be too busy formulating new syllabus for CSAT after all these protests. Anyway, it shouldn't be an issue for me. (Hoping to clear the exam this year at any cost). Evolution test series has started. Will try to give the feedback and share the experience asap.

Hopefully Zoology preparation is going on well for all of us. Good luck guys!

Yes! I completely agree. There is no point in even attempting to cover the whole syllabus. For example in biochemistry portion, only the Vitamin chapter has so many reactions that there are not that many reactions in the whole paper combined and maximum one question can be asked, (that can be skipped as the option) and even if a compulsory question comes from it for 10 marks. We have general knowledge about that enough to get 2 marks atleast. So, topics should our be prepared wisely. Because no matter how interesting and scoring our subject is it, if I am not wrong it has the most vast syllabus among all.

  • And guys if anyone of us is in habit of note-making, please share it. I am also making some notes. will upload them soon. We will get the different ideas about the topics from the variety of source, which will fetch us the extra marks.

I am also planning to post questions weekly for answer writing practice. We can write and share the answers, so that we can compare our answers and get review and feedback. (atleast on the presentation of the answer)

    (Suggestions please)!!!

  • @Nocturnal90 Are you using Evolution study material for Zoology as well?
  • Anybody having concise notes for biostats and economic zoo portion(cattle disease et al)
  • @Nocturnal90 Are you using Evolution study material for Zoology as well?
No! I am just appearing for the test series. They are evaluating the copies really well and also paying attention to every individual during post test discussion classes.

If you want concise notes , you can go for Zoology series by Pandey TMH vol5, it's a very thin book, topics are covered in point format. For biostat you can also consider Ignou notes.

  • @Nocturnal90 Thanks for the link and suggestion regd the book.
  • hi guys... im new on forumias... my optional is also zoology... im referring to evolution notes mostly... they are well structured and in the format of answers... for parts which i felt were lacking in content, im doing it from the internet... i think we are lucky that for almost every topic you will find a video on youtube explaining it lucidly...

im going to write the mains this year... thanks for creating this thread... gl hf :)
  • Hi guys
I m also planning to take zoology as optional next yr exam.
Pls tell me the strategy for this optional n I m confused that how to manage this subject as it has no relevance with GS syllabus..guide me guys
  • @h215

take zoology only if you done it previously for graduation or if you have a strong liking for that subject... starting it from scratch would be too lengthy...

    my study format
evolution notes + YouTube videos + internet surfing
(that's my strategy. not referring to any of the std books since evolution already has notes in answer format. and for understanding just Google the topics to get a brief understanding and then refer to evolution notes)
  • @h215

and it doesn't have any relevance to GS syllabus. but anyways in my opinion you shouldn't choose a subject on that criteria.
  • Thanks @blitzkadu
I have done pharmacy and have read topics of biochem;physiology;instrumention. Spectrometry cell genetics some topics in my graduation. Further I had medical during +1 n +2.
I am getting evolution class notes of 2010 year from market..shud I buy these 2010 year notes or recent year notes???
