Is fuel(in personal car) a final good or intermediate good?

It is purchased by final consumer but used in a consumer durable and gets consumed. Not able to decide whether it is a final good or intermediate good. Kindly help.

Comments

  • Final good because the fuel purchaser(car owner) isn't selling the fuel to someone else.

  • Final good if car is owned. Intermediate if car is a cab/taxi. The fuel in the latter case becomes a good in fulfillment of a service.

Fuel is a final good here. Its used for final stage personal cnsumption and not as a component of the production process of another final good. Fuel used in a factory to run the machines would for example be counted as a raw material cost or intermediate good.
  • Thanks for your replies. In vajiram vibhas notes, it is mentioned as intermediate good. Even i think its a final good.
  • Usually it depends on the case. If nothing is mentioned about usage place or situation, assume its a raw matterial in the production process.
  • I am still inclined to think of it as a final product. I believe the definition should be based on who buys the product.
