  • Better buy Majid Hussain and you get everything in two books. One for india and one for world.
    ·
  • Use strahler and strahler for clearing any doubts pertaining physical geo doubts. However don't use it as a primary source. Use it only as a venue to clear doubts.

I don't know why people jump to specialist books before finishing the basics completely. Others may disagree.

Physical geography ke kuch static Topic Wikipedia par achhe diye hue hain.. Wahaan se kuch achha reading stuff mil jaayega aapko.

Uske alawa thoda aur padhne ki iccha ho toh, ek " Geography and You " Magazine achhi aati hai.. Is magazine mein Current and Static Geography achha diya hua rehta hai.

Baaki fir NCERT books toh hai hi...
Death is nothing , but to live defeated and inglorious , is to Die daily .

@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh sir ji plss tell what are the sources for the applied physical grography which one needs to do for the mains exam......

Also, agar Physical geography ho jaayegi toh geography ka THE END(for prelims and mains exam) ho jaayega, ya phir abhi bhi Indian Geography and World geography karni padegi.

Since, geography seems difficult to me, so please bear with me if my query seems to be ridiculous............. :) :)

@Shad sir g is this sufficient for mains exam also?

Can we simply ignore GC Leong? Or it needs to be referred (for prelims and mains exam)
Also, agar Physical geography ho jaayegi toh geography ka THE END(for prelims and mains exam) ho jaayega, ya phir abhi bhi Indian Geography and World geography karni padegi.

Since, prelims ke syllabus mein it is mentioned India and world geography, so that is why this question came to my mind.

Also, from where to do maps. I mean, do we really need an atlas or only the map of India and world physical and political maps would be sufficient.

@supercooldude bhai, Your query is not at all ridiculous. You may check my past queries about Economics where I perspired a lot.

Geography for Non-Optional can be broadly categorised into 3 parts (I'm ignoring rarely asked areas)

    1. Physical Geography Concepts
No ratta here pls. Read this section like you read Science. Understand all the concepts given in NCERT like, Solar system, Interior of Earth, Volcano, Earthquake, Rocks, Landforms, Erosion, Atmosphere, Temperature, Precipitation, Wind, Oceanic landforms, water circulation and Monsoon.

    2. Indian Geography
Cramming here. Geology, Rivers, Environment, DM, Agriculture, Energy Resources and their location etc.

    3. Current Affairs
I will classify World Geography under CA only. Keep an eye on the places which are in news and search for their neighborhood with the help of static Atlas or better Google. e.g. Olive ridley was in vogue last year, I googled places around that and got to know about Chandipur which helped me in 1 direct question. Similarly, Fortaleza was asked, because of BRICS summit. Chennai Floods, UK landslides etc etc.

For point 1. and 2., New NCERT is best and sufficient source. GC Leong can be refered on need basis only. Majid Hussain, Khullar, Strahler, etc. not at all required.
For point 3. The Hindu is best source.

This covers both Pre and Mains.

  • @Shad Sir, please also illuminate about whether to use atlas or only the maps would solve the purpose of preparing for geography(for gs).

    1. Aaj tak samajh hee nahi aaya, kee teachers(and toppers) kyun kehte hain kee atlas refer kar lena'exam ke last minute revision par. Are these people with old mindset(= puraane khayalaat waale log, you know :D ) who dont know the existence of google maps, etc. The point i want to make here, is that can we not look the places in google simply rather than searching(and marking) the places in atlas.

    2. Also, sir, many teachers(and toppers) say that GC Leong ka part 2 toh pakka he padh lena. I mean that classification of the various types of climates. Are they really to be read from GC Leong or GC Leong can be dispensed away with.

Last year, i was talking to a successful student and he told me that GC Leong can be completely dispensed with if you supplement ncerts with internet. Is it true? But i forgot to ask him my next query:

    3. Sir, can you give an idea of how much we need to google the concepts given in the ncert books. I mean can you illustrate it through a concept's example.

    4. @Shad Sir, please answer my this query related to economics: http://discuss.forumias.com/discussion/15489/how-to-prepare-economics-for-gs/p3

    Best regards

PS: If you feel that typing responses is too long, then i can give you a phone call. Just message me your mobile number.......

But don't study more than required, Geography is very vast.

  • @Shad sir, : please reply :

    1. with respect to the hindu, should we read the life page(=last page of the Hindu) for knowing things like turtle found in xyz place, etc.

    2. Sir,i am still not able to know how much we need to google. I mean do we need to keep the scope of our coverage the same as that given in the ncert books and the only thing should be that i have to understand the scope of those concepts from google. Have i interpreted you rightly?

    3. Sir, do we need to cover the geography videos of some specific website like mrunal, unacademy, etc. or are they not needed at all.

    4. And finally the big question: How to cover environment for gs mains paper 3 and for PRELIMS. Since, geography and environment are so closely related. SO, could you please mention some source to cover environment. I mean , i have tried so many of the sources and i have not been able to conclude that xyz is a decent source for preparing environment. I tried ministry of environment website and found it useless, i tried shankar's book and did only 6 chapters from it(as per the syllabus and i did the chapters after seeing a discussion on forumias). I have also done last chapter from 11th class chemistry ncert book and i have also done the group of chapters relating to ecology from 12th class ncert of biology.

So, basically, i have done 11th class chemistry ncert(=1chapter) + 12th class bio ncert(= last unit on ecology) + shankar's book(=6 chapters only and not the entire book).

What else do i need to do? Is there something which i should reject from the sources which i have done.

    5. Sir, what ncerts should i do for science for prelims? Since, mrunal mentions so many things for science prelims and i find him pretty useless, so could you mention broadly the ncerts of science which need to be done for prelims.

    6. And sir, for topics like investment models(in gs mains paper 3)agriculture topic(in gs mains paper 3) , disaster management(= in gs mains paper 3), social justice(in gs mains paper 2): for such topics if i do only the vision's value addition material, would that be sufficient or do i need to also read the write ups on websites like civilserviceindia.com, etc. (basically, the websites which come in the search results when we google these terms, for eg. investment models)

  • @Sodhi2016
    Mrunal Lectures
    6-12th NCERTs
Any Test Series, which provides questions.
This is more that sufficient for this Exam. But completing the syllabus and understanding/remembering the concepts are two different things. So make sure that you do this syllabus thoroughly so that you can explain any given concept in simple terms.
By any means, you should read and revise this much atleast 4 times before Prelims.

    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. Depends on your understanding of that particular topic as these videos have low RoI.
    4. You are reading correct sources for Env. but it's getting more Current Affairs oriented. Compilations of diff institutes are of some help. Focus on CA.
    5. If you are from Science background, no need to do any NCERT. It's CA only!
    6. Just glance through Vision material once to get hold of syllabus but prepare these topics from The Hindu.

If I suggest you TMH, you will end up wasting much of your time. I would rather advise you to get hold of S&T compilations of various institutes and google where you are finding it hard to understand. It's actually Technology only not General Science which UPSC mentions in the syllabus.
