Sir .....I am planning for CSE - 2018.....I was little bit confused between Sociology and Mathematics optional....But after this year Mathematics optional mains paper, I really got scared after reading reviews of candidates....They were telling that...This year Mathematics questions paper was too much difficult...It got a mixture of physics and mathematics (of course)......So... Finally I have decided to take sociology optional but not started preparing yet....But I am in dilemma right now....Because on one side.... Sociology has less syllabus and materials are easily available but on another side.... Mathematics is there whose syllabus is huge but high chance of getting 250+ and it will help in IFoS...Sir....

If you have even little doubt or are not comfortable with Maths, then dont take it. It will take a lot of your preparation time. 250+ looks good on marksheet but takes an enormous amount of work without any benefit in GS which we never realise.

  • Could someone point me towards Mathematics Optional booklist from foreign authors? I searched Prakash Rajpurohit sir's blog and he had only listed Indian author books.
  • Hello friends, I would like to introduce myself. I am Chirag Jain, and I have graduated in EE from IIT Kanpur in 2015. I have appeared in 2016 mains, and have not been able to clear (probably due to Maths). I look forward to work collaboratively with the Maths fraternity here, and make my contribution as well as learn from the seniors. I am at the stage where I have completed most of my syllabus (except few minor topics), but lack in exam-solving skills such as judicious choice of questions, tackling the exam pressure, etc. I hope that I would be able to overcome my weaknesses with the help of the fraternity. Thanks and all the best.
  • Hello Sir,
I have heard scaling is a very influencing factor for Maths optional for final score. I have 2 queries.. Can you please answer them. It will be great help for me.
    1. Is it possible to attempt 500/500 in Maths ?
    2. How much is the average attempt in Maths optional and how much attempt will approximately let someone to have 250+ after scaling.

    Hello Chirag,
Welcome to the group. I heard that Maths was very tough this time specially Paper 2. Can you please tell how much should one attempt for getting 250+ and is attempting 500/500 possible ?

Yes, relatively easy paper with top notch prepration & practice will help you attempt 500. With complete "correct" attempt & perfect presentation detailing all the required steps will get you 300+

This year 400+ attempt was required to clear mains, despite being a very tough P2

420+ correct attempt should get you 250+ is my guess. Requires Great Effort to Reach 400+ attempt, especially this year

Well it depends on toughness of paper ....In 2014 k. Nitish attempted more than 480 and got 346.....But in 2016 paper was not like to attempt above 400....I too can't attempt more than 100 marks in P2 ...And finally out of race...Best part is that have a grip over 3 main topics of P2 ( Aljebra hydro N classical)

Don't go too much in theory part from foreign authors...Especially in paper 2 ....Koi bhi book uthao and examples sahit sabh khuchh ghot jao.....Speed usi se aayega....Foreign authors are not clearing UPSC ...They are for research and doing phd
