    Modernity

It is a visible, tangible change in society and a break from the traditions of the past. The concept has been used to highlight the difference arising in society after it embraces modern concepts like rationalisation and individualism. A change in the various institutions which celebrate the choices of individual over archaic forms of social control.

modernity is just not a specific term for sociology, its not a keyword either, its a key concept of sociology.since sociology is primarily the study of modern society, almost the whole subject of sociology is around the concept of modernity.

modern as a concept has its genesis when the followers of jesus chirst distinguished themseles as modern in contrast to the followers of judaism.hence it was a break from the thinking of the past.hence they considered themselves as modern.

however in todays time the modern people does not mean christians rather it only keep its etimological sense in the sense that its distinct from past.however anything that is distinct from past is not necessarily modern.

for example renaissance was rather a period which went back to the past by stoking interst around the eralier greek and roman civilization and study of such literature, breaking away from medieval time and church control.hence at that moment emergence of modernity had its root by going to the past rather than the then period which was replete with theology, obscurantism and religious dogma.

    modernity has 2 aspects

    1.thought/value modernity
    2.structural/institutional modernity

1.it refers to the changes in the ways things are percieved, assessed, examined or the way truth/knowledge is established.hence key to this lies in rationality, empiricism, scienticism.

2.instituional modernity follows from the first one.due to rationality, empiricism and faith in science leads to changes in structure and institutions of society.however 2 does not necessarily always preceded by 1.for example in case of india first modern structure or institutions came before there was change in system of values.

for weber modernization necessarliy means rationalization.he saw them coming up only in the west, not elsewhere.bureaucrtaization is a manifestation of modernization.

m n srinivas distinguished westernization from modernization.for example wearing tie and suit at 45 degree summer in india is no modernization, rather its westernization.however taking up occupation which is different from mandated caste based occupation is modernization eg-brahmin opening a barber shop or farming the land.

yogendra singh -modernization of indian tradition.

for yogendra insgh indian tradition-1.hierarchy,2.holism,3.transcendance ,4.continuity
and modernization is.....democracy,constitutionalism,education system, court, rule of law bla bla bla

  • aur bhi bahat kuch he modernity ke bare mein.itna type nehin ho paega.
