GST Rates announced - 5% 12% 18% 28% + cess

1. How will this help uncomplicate things?? What's the difference between this and current regime (apart from multiple level of taxation)?

2. Will this lead to increase in prices of alcohol????????? :'(

Maybe..it has been left to the states. I hope they make it costlier!

You are forgetting that in previous regime, there were multiple taxes on a single product, excise, sales, etc on a single good. This led to multiple point of collection and a huge cascading effect thus raising effective rate of taxes. Now there is only one tax on a good(different goods have different ratei.e those 4) , which will be collected at the destination state. There is a debate going on cesses, and only time will tell what structure it might assume. Aur Daru to ban hone wali hai Directive Principle ke thahat :D

I'm finding it difficult to understand the advantages of this multi-layered GST. Is there an article where it has been explained in a simplified manner? Thanks

    Got the answer. :)
    1. A single GST tax rate would be highly inflationary
    2. On so-called demerit and sin goods such as aerated drinks, luxury cars, tobacco and pan masala, a cess will be levied by the centre over and above the 28% slab. The cess will be levied in such a manner that the final tax incidence on such demerit items is not less than the existing tax rates

  • overall rates my increase as present 14.5-15% tax items will go in 18% slab..
such 4 rates were necessary to to wide ranging items like jaitley said a shoe and AC cnt be taxed at same rate..
bt i still doubt whether most of traders will cm into tax credit scheme? why wil they join?
it will matter in the end...definitely..
  • But even Indian made foreign liquor will be taxed above the highest 28% slab. I didn't want to live any more. But I will have to live to provide increased tax support for my government. :'(
