  • i might be in. Not 100% sure though. i am stuck in between of geography and agri. but would continue contributing in this thread.
Do or do not, there is no try.
  • sure .........but you should decide your optional asap.
in geo you can easily get coaching+material+test series+some 100s or 1000 to compete
in agriculture though 10-20 maximum candidates but material test series is problem.
only book list is available one has to do all labor work

Marriage is like retiring as a bachelor and getting a sexual pension. You don't have to work for the sex any more, but you only get 65% as much.
  • give your book list please

  • Has anyone started preparing for optional? I shall be starting from 15th dec onwards. Although i am really worried that why agri people don't discuss whole heartedly on forums on this site regarding strategies, books, topics etc. I hope they do realize that behaviour is going to cost them badly as well as to the forum's agri brethern. Maybe they are apprehensive of too many people jumping into agri bandwagon !!

haha I wouldn't say so, see, if such were the case the IFS only Forestry folks would have pulled down the shutters already. But, look at how active the civil engineering and forestry folks are this year.

Could be that folks have their niche telegram or whatsapp groups and they don't bother to stick around the forum. Its very typical of most folks to take help and not give back, head out to whatever forums you can find. Could be that Ag people already have their gang from ug/pg or that the few handful are in coaching and don't bother with the forum at all.

I second your suggestion as well and would recommend keeping the discussions here, instead of forming groups else where, simply to collate materials as well as to help the current and future aspirants.

i second that they are busy in telegram/whatsapp group. maybe the niche they are into currently is supplementing enough for them (which i doubt when it's CSE). anyhw, i"ll try my best to keep this thread updated and share as much as possible. Starting with paper 2. Topics- Cell structure.... till.. genetcis part. Source: have studied bio in BITS Pilani, so have a fair idea of some good books on that topic. I will have a look into them and based on questions which came in past few years, would stick to a suitable one.

  • Awesome, you are great!

Maybe prepare sort of a study schedule? Are there e-formats available for the ICAR books/surveys?

  • couldn't find one. let me know if you get them. study schedule i will plan after going through in detail of whole syllabus and resource. probably before 15th dec. have you started?
Do or do not, there is no try.
  • Nah, not yet.I am yet undecided between Forestry and Ag, Ag has a good amount of material available, Forestry doesn't. But forestry will take less time than Ag, wat to do?

Yes, I will keep an eye out for the ICAR material. If I do find hardcopies, 10 pages or 1000, I will definitely scan it.

  • Agriculture for non bio background people...is it advisable. I have an engineering background.

Take last 2-3 year papers of those subjects which you are considering to take as an optional and look at the questions and syllabus again and again. You may spend some time daily for each subject. This activity needs to get over within a week. You may end up with likes of one or possibly two of them.
I leave it upto you which one to choose as it depends on one's own rational like 'i like reading 1 more than 2' OR 'i can read both 1&2 without discrimination but syllabus of 1 is less than 2 along with less unpredictability'. That's your call.
After doing this, without putting even an iota of your brain thinking of your decision, just start studying and jump into the uncharted territory of UPSC.
    Finally, remember a great man once said "अच्छा लगे या ना लगे, पढ़ना तो पडेगा ही."
    Always keep it in mind.
Do or do not, there is no try.
  • And is the preparation for IFoS and state PCS for agri different?

Tip- dont worry about cost it will be definitely very low but not free, of course ;) ..
  • how much time agri will take to study it ,considering 2017 mains
  • I m just getting more unsure about agriculture guys as there's just no proper material available for the subject unlike forestry which has definite 2 or 3 books...most of my friends are recommending taking forestry as they think that it's easier to prepare for non agriculture students ...not sure what to do ...also all the blogs of toppers have forestry as their optional and this is making me even more unsure about agriculture ...does anyone know how many selected candidates for agriculture have vis a vis forestry last year ?
    Thanks
  • Forestry is a very easy subject with very limited topics unlike agri which is vast... I preferred agri over Forestry as Agri had lot of overlap with Geography optional in Civils and GS3....
    IFS - 2014 AIR 38 Geology n Agriculture ; Interview : 207/300
    CSE - 2014 AIR 1088 - Geography; Interview : 209/275

  • Hi people,

I am planning to skip Civils this year(last attempt) and take the IFoS.

I am an engineer and plan to take either Forestry and Botany
    Or Agri and Botany.

    Please advise. Thanks.
