Extra attempts and age relaxation in CS : Fight for it

  • Aah! Surprised to know that this is also happening!
If UPSC allows extra attempts and age relaxation, I would be benefited; but in my view this is not good. Rather I would advocate for reduction in age limit gradually and 4-5 years down the line UPSC starts conducting this exam at intermediate level.

30 years is quite a large limit. After graduation, its the time to do something productive and add value for India rather than being unproductive for 2-4 years and prepare for an exam !

Let UPSC conduct this exam at intermediate level and enroll the successful candidates in a course specially designed for administrative jobs. Make those students expert of some areas, and after 4-5 years of study place them in suitable departments as IAS/IPS/IRS etc. Remember this is the age of competition, generalist way of administration would not be fruitful. At the age of 16-18 years, it is easier to put the dose of ethics, accountability, broader views rather than at the age of 30 years.

Also, there will be good utilization of human capital. People will have to make a choice among engineering, medical, law, administration etc. All domain can have systematic utilization of resources. People will not give the example that a doctor from AIIMS has wasted huge amount of money and opportunity cost when he/ she joins IAS.

Nevertheless, I wish all the best to my friends who are working hard for extra attempt. Good luck.

you, in fact have raised a very valid point. Even, I failed to understand the reasoning behind holding a common preliminary examination for forest and CSM. Instead of filtering out non-serious candidates, this system has led to elimination of serious candidates. Out of 1000 candidates they have shortlisted I highly doubt that even 30-40 candidates would be serious. I have met around 50 candidates till now and haven't met even a single who has both the optionals prepared. As per my friends in Rajendra Nagar, around 200-300 candidates are sitting just for the sake of writing GS paper. They won't be even writing optionals papers.

Plus, paperwise cutoff of 30% by UPSC. I don't think they will be able to select 250 candidates for interview.
I think you should create a separate thread for this and encourage people to file a petition for separation of forest prelims from mains.

We have been working on it since march...We got appointment with DoPT minister V. Narayanasamy and he gave positve assurances to look into matter in coming winter session.
another good news is we are going to meet Congress VP on 29th November 9am... 12 Tughlaq Lane, Race Course Metro Station Gate no-2...We got call from PS of Rahul Gandhi two days back... You all in delhi are welcome at 9am, racecourse metro station gate-2.

Precedence of 1979, 1990,1992 are in our favour...
    CSE-2015 .
Score well enough in the Prelims, so that you don't have to jump in the cutoff speculation market after 6pm 23rd Aug, instead start practising mock essays and GS-1,2,3,4.

  • For people who are unaware with the adverse impacts of changes in the schemes of exams of UPSC!!! I would like to point out errors of judgements by UPSC through facts...
IFoS-2013 after introduction of PT this year and merging it with CSE-PT, quality of IFoS recruits is getting diluted...why??? let me put some facts: Out of 1061 people qualified for mains only 500 people had written mains this year, why those 500+ were absent in mains exam? because those people are no serious aspirants of IFoS, they got selected due to common PT thing only...so these people wasted chances of genuine IFoS candidates and reduced competition in mains.... In first year itself common PT is doing injustice MoEF, because quality of IFoS will be diluted.... DoPT, MoEF and UPSC must take notice of these err decisions...We are working on it....

completely agree with this is bro! many have just written only the GS of IFoS and bunking the rest this year.. Absolutely no competition in IFoS this time. a very bad move by upsc by merging CSE and IFoS prelims.

this "movement" has failed to get any traction with educated leaders, now only hope is with "youth" leader rahul gandhi and some hindi belt parties like SP, RJD, LJP, JDU

  • There is some news that 3 extra attempts will be given to everybody like 1979.clarify @sandyc

Means competition will be tough for next few years and number of people filling forms will be 3-4 times.

though number of applicants would certainly go up in case of blanket increase. three factors need to be considered - 1. there might not be a blanket increase, some conditionality may be imposed to limit the numbers as well as pacify protestors 2. most of these older applicants won't clear prelims anyway, due to CSAT factor and ever increasing cut-offs. 3. ultimately, interview is the make or break for 90 percent who clear mains, and the upsc people would not favour the old guys.
I believe this relaxation would not be helpful to 99.99 percent of beneficiaries, instead wean away another few years off their productive lives on top of the few they already have given away.

Agree that there would not be major difference except in mains.Do you have any news? I have heard they have relaxed age-3years and 3 fresh attempts to everyone.

Considering your meaning of 'official news' there wont be any, until the notification is out. We had no idea and there was no official news if the pattern was changing or not this time even in feb 2013 (1 month before 2013 notif) but still there were rumours doing rounds that the pattern has changed for good and it proved to be correct when the notif was out.. its the same even this time, there's a high possibility that the age limit will be raised to 33 and another 2 attempts will be given to general candidates from cse 2014

i have heard the news (or "rumour") too. seems like ruling party is leaving no stone unturned to appease all it can.. anyways this decision would have little impact in the grand scheme of things as i said earlier..

@pessimist102 there are many people like @thor who are giving their 1st attempt at 30 and if the age limit if raised to 33 it will be a boon to them. Even I have a friend who is exactly in the same situation and profile like thor and he's waiting for govt to give him an other attempt. These guys can be effective and u cant dismiss them as having little impact.

@rookie latest news that i know about this is here.......

    http://zeenews.india.com/news/nation/no-proposal-to-relax-upper-age-limit-for-upsc-exam-govt_897670.html

Not sure about the source of this new "development" but it seems verbal only.....about the pattern change effected from this year...UPSC, DOPT AND DPA had clearly indicated that pattern change is round the corner...but in this case...all are rejecting such a proposal itself.....

If such a relaxation does happen...i will be the happiest person on this planet...... if only
    :(

i agree. that is why i think blanket extension should not be given. those who have cleared csat during the pattern change should be excluded. anyways, deserving people like thor bhai would actually have positive impact and always welcome in the "grand scheme of things" as i said earlier.

Hello guys... Is it really true that age realaxation process at government level is really happening... Please let me know
Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanasamy told Lok Sabha in a written reply a month ago, very clearly, that "There is no proposal to relax fresh attempts and consequently relaxation in the upper age limit".

    http://zeenews.india.com/news/nation/no-proposal-to-relax-upper-age-limit-for-upsc-exam-govt_897670.html

Hence, it is highly improbable that any relaxation is happening. Rumours will obviously be there about it happening because people want it to be true.
