Crux of IPL scam??

edited July 2013 in Current Affairs
I don't get what IPL scam was all about, what was the conflict of interest involved and how does spot fixing and all fit in.. can someone plz elucidate??

  • The basic conflict of interest was that Mr. N. Srinivasan was the chairman of BCCI, the parent body of IPL, while also being associated with one of the teams. This is similar to a situation where a person in-charge of awarding a public works tender is also applying for it. As chairman of the organizing body, one can be privy to information that isn't available to other team owners and can even change rules in various ways to suit one's team. The rules of BCCI were amended specifically to elect him and gloss over this conflict of interest.

Spot fixing is merely one of the outcomes of the general financial and operational opaqueness and poor governance of IPL in particular, and BCCI in general. For example, the tickets to after-match parties were distributed on first-come-first-serve basis without discretion and checks, giving bookies unprecedented access to the players and possibly fix matches. There wasn't a proper counselling system in place for hundreds of domestic players coming into the fold.
