Which is better source fot Internationl Relation for UPSC Pre-2016??

considering last year's Q paper for GS, IR has become important. PLZ Suggest any source having all basics for pre ..

Comments

  • Though I don't remember last year questions. But imo "The Hindu" remains the best choice, given IR questions due to its very nature are dynamic therefore no such reference material would suffice.
    Life is one challenge it!

Hi, If you are talking about the increased weightage of IR in Prelims in 2015 Prelims, then here is the thing.

These are the questions that are supposedly asked in Prelims from International Relations

1 The ‘Fortaleza Declaration’ recently in the news, is related to the affairs of:
    a) ASEAN
    b) BRICS
    c) OECD
    d) WTO

    2. The area known as ‘Golan Heights’ sometimes appears in the news in the context of the events related to:
    a) Central Asia
    b) Middle East
    c) South-East Asia
    d) Central Africa

    3. India is a member of which of the following?
    1. Asia-Pacific economic corporation.
    2. Association of South-East Asian Nations.
    3. East Asia Summit

Select the correct answer using the code given below.
    1. 1 and 2 only
    2. 3 only
    3. 1, 2, and 3
    4. India is a member of none of them

    4) With reference to ‘Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC)’,
    Consider the following statements:
    1. It was established very recently in response to incidents of piracy and accidents of oil spills
    2. It is an alliance meant for maritime security only
Which of the following statements given above is/are correct?
    1. 1 only
    2. 2 only
    3. Both 1 and 2
    4. Neither 1 nor 2

    5. ‘Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’ often seen in the news, is
    1. a strategy to tackle the regional terrorism, an outcome of a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
    2. a plan of action for sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific Region, an outcome of deliberations of the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum
    3. an agenda for women’s empowerment, an outcome of a World Conference convened by the United Nations
    4. a strategy to combat wildlife trafficking, a declaration of the East Asia Summit

    6. Consider the following countries

    1. China
    2. France
    3. India
    4. Israel
    5. Pakistan
Which among the above are Nuclear Weapons States as recognized by the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)?
    1. 1 and 2 only
    2. 1, 3, 4 and 5 only
    3. 2, 4 and 5 only
    4. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

A total of six questions appeared in Prelims 2016 from IR.

Now please take a look at each question one by one and the source from which it could have been asked.
    *No good deed goes unpunished*
  • Question No 1

The ‘Fortaleza Declaration’ recently in the news, is related to the affairs of:
    a) ASEAN
    b) BRICS
    c) OECD
    d) WTO

Anyone who has been reading the newspaper should be able to answer this. This came in the newspaper again and again and it required no special preparation. It is merely a Current Affairs Question and not an IR question

This was so much in news that it was even included in a discussion in forumias. See the below comment

    http://discuss.forumias.com/discussion/comment/359582/#Comment_359582
    *No good deed goes unpunished*
  • Ek aur question Mekong ganga type ka tha.
  • 2. The area known as ‘Golan Heights’ sometimes appears in the news in the context of the events related to:
    a) Central Asia
    b) Middle East
    c) South-East Asia
    d) Central Africa

Now again, due to conflict in the Middle East , Golan heights has been in news not only last year but at least for 4-5 years - maybe more.

This again does not require you to do IR separately. The Hindu would have sufficed.
    *No good deed goes unpunished*
  • Question 3

    3. India is a member of which of the following?
    1. Asia-Pacific economic corporation.
    2. Association of South-East Asian Nations.
    3. East Asia Summit

Select the correct answer using the code given below.
    1. 1 and 2 only
    2. 3 only
    3. 1, 2, and 3
    4. India is a member of none of them

Again, what may have helped in this question is NOT the fact of knowing the list of members states of each o such organisation.

I call this an inference based question - based on what you have already read following the newspaper.

Is India a member of APEC. Now the term here is Asia Pacific. You could easily guess here ( and with some reading know it to be true ) that India is not even geographically a part of Asia Pacific region. India is NOT a member of APEC.

ASEAN - India is a part of South Asia and the ASEAN is grouping of South East Asian Nations. Note that India had an opportunity to be a part of it much earlier, when ASEAN nations were much weaker . But that time India used to Look West.

Only After India's Look East Policy shift did India start taking South East Asia seriously. ( You can relate how we do not enjoy great /close people to people ties with ASEAN despite historical linkages ). However, it was in everybody's interest to keep ASEAN limited to SE Asian nations.

( If India comes, China comes, then USA comes and the block ends up being nothing. ASEAN has issues keeping itself intact in the first place, read about cheque book dipomacy of China, Influence on Combodia, India's ties with Vietnam ( and why? )) after the Prelims

EAS - East Asia Summit was held in November 2015 and was in news. Also m East Asia Summit provides a big platform for outside ASEAN nations to interact and build ties with ASEAN Nations. If you knew this part , you would be able to answer this question.

Again, The Hindu was sufficient for this.

  • 4) With reference to ‘Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC)’,
    Consider the following statements:

Was in news. Has been in news. It is again Current Affairs and does not require special IR preparation.

Now the above is a favourite UPSC question. It has been asked in the Mains before as well. It was 20 years of the women's empowerment thing and was mentioned in news. However, if you skipped this question, it is totally alright as this questions may not not have seemed important and been solved without some experience. ( I do not expect new aspirants to prepare off topic things. I expect them to follow very conventional preparation stragey and solve those questions which are the easiest. )

    6. Consider the following countries

    1. China
    2. France
    3. India
    4. Israel
    5. Pakistan
Which among the above are Nuclear Weapons States as recognized by the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)?
    1. 1 and 2 only
    2. 1, 3, 4 and 5 only
    3. 2, 4 and 5 only
    4. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Nuclear Non Proliferation is in news, was in news and will be in news every year . The last thre months of the year are summit times - before the West moves into vacation for Christmas and New Year celebrations - they try to hold all the summits before December. This was solvable again from the newspaper.

So do read a couple of articles on Nuclear Security Summit ( NSS) and how Iran had held its onw NSS a few years ago and you will develop a clear understanding of the topic - forever!

However, I would still say that 4 out 6 questions were easy and the last 2 may have been not so easy. Hindu is the only thing you will ever need.

You may also refer to the 9 PM brief if you have missed newspaper for long. The IR coverage is decent. Hope this helps.
