What steps can the government take to increase air connectivity to smaller cities?

Hi Guys,

Govt has recently increased cess on all fights to Rs. 8000 so that the money that can be got from this can be used to sponsor flights to small towns. What other steps can the government take to increase air connectivity to small towns?

    Building no frills airports

  • low cost public sector airlines..with comparatively lesser on board facilities, like no in flight meals for certain distances.
  • @Fuhrer Sir, what would you call no frills airport?

  • Okay, any other policy measures required? This is the infrastructural issue. This is one point. Any other :(
    Writing CSE Mains 2016
  • As one measure to improve regional connectivity, the DGCA has issued Route Dispersal Guidelines ( RDGs)
which mandate ALL domestic carriers to fly a part of their flight operations in faraway places.
But this measure is protested by All airlines now, just like the 5:20 rule.

But for connectivity to improve in smaller cities, the only remedy lies in an increased Local Purchasing Power ( LPP ),
because even if Air India keeps up economically nonviable flights in smaller cities, Private players will hardly pitch in, until and unless they see profit.
