  • Hi

Nice way to start. I did masters from IITB in 2010. It took me 3 years to realise what a private company job is like. So shifted my focus to CSE. Attempted CSP 2013 but 2014 will be my 1st serious attempt. I live in hyderabad.
  • I am starting with hydrology.
Books: SK Garg (Primary source), Ven-Te-Chow & Raghunath (Secondary sources)
Analysis: Over the years, direct questions on UH, no. of rainfall gauges have reduced. Focus is more on complicated topics as far as numericals are concerned.
However theory questions are much on the lines & predictable.

@bharat141 : Great Bro. Do share your strategy. We will make this thread a gem.

  • @alphaqsecc

I am currently in full swing for ESE-2013. So i will be replying a little liesurely on the thread. I will increase the pace from July.

VTChow is an awesome book which covers the basics perfectly. It is very good for learning concepts but should be complemented by any Indian author book for solving problems.

    @rak8rc

Welcome bro. We shall discuss all you have mentioned and let us give our best shot at CSE-2014.
  • @bharat141 : All the very best brother. May you come out with flying colours. Sure, do come back in July.

@rak8rc : Mate, trend changes with years. We will strive to create a wonderful, rational thread of serious aspirants.

  • thanx u all for providing great n relevant information, a systematic approach will lead to our success. we should follow same code for referring all our broad topic(sub subjects) like Structure analysis-STA , members pl suggest for all our sub subject and then we will be on same frequency,
by the way which book is good for STA- i also have R.c.Hibler besides other general book, i am guessing many of us r going to appear for next week exam, so we wll come of details of strategy /procedure/sequence when all member free to give their suggestion, members not giving Es exam pl give ur valuable inputs. Best of luck guys for ur ES exams.
  • @rak8rc : R.C.Hibbler is a good book. Supplement it with NPTEL pdf's. I haven't touched any of topics of P-I so others may please pour in.

  • Paper II topic: Construction technology

Booklist: Bindra & Arora, SK Duggal

Strategy: I feel in this humongous theoretical section, one should study with photographic memory. Memorize diagrams & not data. Let the answers flow from your perfect diagrams.
We shall try & present answers for few model questions as time passes.

Note: Esp for this part refer to previous years' question papers & extrapolate liberally.

Please pour in your thoughts, ideas too so that we may mutually benefit :)

  • @rak8rc : Mate, I'm working with a PSU since almost an year now. You can find time if you desperately need to crack UPSC or else we can have truckloads of excuses like lack of time, energy, sucky boss to name a few.
    Just go for it :)

I am a working professional. working since 2 years in a pvt company. It is difficult to study while working but when you want to crack CSE, you should find time to study against all odds.
  • Transportation Engineering

    LR Kadiyali - airport enguneering
LR Kadiyali , Khanna & Jhusto - Highway Engineering
    Saxena - Railway Engineering

It is a vast syllabus with less weightage of marks. Easy to study with very small formulae :P

  • @alphaqsecc

apologies.. i was too much preoccupied with ESE 2013.

for RCC go for pillai & menon. Its a very good book and generates intrest in subject
  • for Soil which book is better.....Can u frnds suggest any book on collection of questions from various sub subject?
  • @bharat141 : How was the exam mate?? Lets enrich this discussion.

@rak8rc: Alam Singh is better for most of the concepts in Soil. Aysen has specialized book for numericals. Grab it. Others: VNS Murthi, Punmia. Advantage with Punmia is that it has solved problems to most of the previous years' question papers.

It was good dost. The objective papers were very lengthy and tricky. Hope to.get an interview call for ESE-13

For steel structures design, should we be studying working stress method or limit state? Any idea?

During my grad i've learnt only WSM, so if LSM is to be followed i should start all over again
  • @bharat141 : Great man. As far as syllabus and previous years' questions are cpncerned we are expected to prepare both WSM and LSM.

  • Hello everyone this thread is what I was searching for. :> I did my PG in strutcures from IITD and I have been selected in ESE -12 and now I'm aiming for CSE-14. I have chosen civil engg. as optional and I have started with strength of materials (Timoshenko and Gere, Timoshenko and Young). I think key to excellent preparation in civil engg. is practice, speed, coverage of syllabus and well written notes. My gmail id is rahulgupta032 and FB id rahulgupta.iit2012. Please share your status of progress as well. I think for 2014 we should finish the syllabus by February 2014. What do you say people ? :-?

  • Why is this discussion so dormant?? Lets share our study routine of civil engineering here. It'd motivate us further.

    1. I'm presently doing Railway. It'll end in 2-3 days. Will then start Highway engineering.
    2. I'll be starting Envo next, I've SK Garg in mind. Any suggestions for books??

Friends even i am from Civil Engineering back ground and started preparation for CSE 2014 with civil engineering as an optional. However after certain days of preparation i found it very difficult ~X( while reading Civil Engineering along with GS ( POLITY or ECONOMICS ) and as marks for optional got reduced (500 ) i felt no risk in switching from Civil Engineering to Other optional with more relevance to GS (1000 Marks) & Essay (250 Marks). Also i felt that Civil Engineering is much tougher and would drain my entire preparation time and also paper is very lengthy which in my opinion difficult to attempt entire question paper. Also it neither helps in Essay nor in GS portion. Also Civ Eng might be helpful for IES or PSUs but if my only aim is IAS , it would only serve as deterrence. Also Optionals like Sociology, Pub adm, Pol Science have much over lap with GS enhancing the preparation. Need ur suggestion friends. whether i'm moving in right direction or not ? :-SS

@KD123 Buddy toughness of subject is a relative term and toughness is never a criteria in choosing optional. You should choose that subject which seems interesting to you, which does not make you feel like pulling your hair. If one has studied one's graduation subject with deep understanding and it seems interesting to that person then one should choose that subject without hesitation. By judging your post I assume that you are not enjoying Civil Engg. then there is no point in continuing with it, select any other subject by finding your interest. As far as time consumption is concerned I think if one have studied Civil Engg. extensively in graduation, it will take 3 months time to finish the syllabus which is less than time required to study a whole new subject but that is if I'm enjoying this subject. I will advice you to find subject according to your interest not by toughness and size of syllabus.
