CSE 2016 Mains Book list

Since there already existed a book list for CSE 2016 Prelims I thought I'd start one specifically for Mains. I hope everyone would give their valuable suggestions. I haven't ever given mains so I really cannot (rather should not :( ) give my inputs at the stage I am in.

  • just another aspirant's booklist/sources suggestion:

NCERT: Themes book + Singhania Art n Culture
NCERT old 12th book (modern India)- first 2 chapter
    Bipin Chandra's India's freedom struggle

NCERT 9th and 10th old world history + Norman Lowe (selectively)

Politics in India after Independence (NCERT political science book) + Bipin Chandra's India after freedom (chap 6-13)

Geography: Ncert 11-12th, G.C.Leong (not cover to cover), and Mrunal lectures on YouTube

Polity: S.C. Kashyap (if time allows and bored from laxmikanth),

vision value addition material topics wise for all topics of paper 2.

IR- Rahi Sikri then follow Rajamohan's page on indian express.

ARC relevant reports (not bible, good to read) (local govt, citizen centric administration, refurbishing admin among few)

The Hindu is Bible for all papers.

Economy- no book needed. Refer what your read for prelims if needed. Newspaper. Eco survey n budget.

Sc n Tech - News paper

Security issues: Any one material (ShankarIAS has released one, brought before mains, had a glance, found relevant but couldn't read), news and internet

Disaster management: Read Gaurav agrawal's notes or Gov't report (link given on GA's blog), though voluminous. Yojna had one dedicated issue in early 2012 (if one have basic idea and want to avoid voluminous report).

Agriculture : Bulk of paper, a book would be good (never read but Dutt and sundaram is suggested as best) then Economic Survey 13-14 chapters on agriculture.

    Ethics : Lexicon

    [my take. Reforms invited]

Can anyone please advice regarding the utility of Plassey to Partition from prelims & GS1 perspective?

@hrishi12091985 bhai, mains ke liye to ab bahut useful hai.. seeing the level of question this and last year of modern history. But if you plan to start this book, then start early then re-read atleast 3 times.. First reading is boring and tough but subsequent reading will make you fall in love with the logic and rationale of all the events.
Baki prelim me to kaam aayega he...
    ·
  • @Maverick33 thanks bhai. Actually yaar main bipin padh padh kar bore ho gaya tha and wanted to read something thats good for knowledge and from exam point of view also. Islie pucha. By the way how is it compared to bipin ? I mean kuch alag viewpoints ya interpretation hai events ka ya fir wahi bipin jaise bas kuch hi personalities ka gun gaan hai ? I would buy the book but just asking for the sake of curiosity.
    ·
  • @Maverick33 bro could you compare if spectrum concise history+ bipan chandra have same level details and points as plassey to partition? Since i have revised these to many times hence asking.
    ·
  • @mixfit0003 yeah that would suffice....ncert macroeconomics is just for basics....if ur looking for economy basics then i would recommend...Indian Economy by Sankarganeshan...........basically covers static part

i included sanjiv verma, becoz it took me 2 days to finish..very smooth read this one.......Dutt&Sundaram as secondary becoz too exhaustive+ it compliments for geo opt. p2
    ·
  • How to prepare for International Relation? Is there any need to read basics for IR ? If yes then form where ?
    ·
  • Can anybody tell what not to read strictly for mains and pre too??
There are better starters than me but I'm a strong finisher.

    @Usain_Bolt can you elaborate
Tumne Jo Meri Kabr Par, Aakar Yun Muskura Diya Bijli Chamak Kar Gir Padi, Sara Kafan Jala Diya…… Main So Raha Tha Chain Se, Yun Hi Kafan E Mazaar Mein, Yahan Bhi Sataane Aa Gaye, Kisne Pata Bata Diya…… Tumne Chadhaye Phool To, Ehsaan Kya Kiya Humne Tumhare Ishq Mein, Sara Chaman Luta Diya….
    ·
  • Bhai static paper k liye sources minimum rakho n energy bachao..baki wiki se karo
    pre - 2, mains - 1*
    ·
  • For mains focus more on answer writing and speed over booklists , keep the current affairs update , exam is becoming current oriented (except GS 1 n GS 4 some parts ) .
    ·
  • politics in india after independence ncert

    which book is this

politics in india since independence ncert is showing on ncert website..kindly clarify
    ·
  • how helpful are ncert in GS paper 1 history portion.
i find them of less use given the dynamic and detailed nature of question.
ncert just give passing mention ...correct me if i am wrong
    ·
  • see plassey to partition by bandhopadhyay
    ·
  • Since last 10 days I am organising my resources and making timetable. I have made a little analysis of previous year papers. After this I have come up with following list. Its my first mains exam, so please recommend any additions or subtraction.

    Paper 1.
    - Ncert art: It has most of the previous year questions covered. If something comes out of it, difficult to cover. Less RoI
    - History: Optional so nothing extra.
    - Geography: Just 4 ncerts
    - Current affairs

That's it. If time permits I have some visionias modules. And then maybe CCRT for some extra topics on culture.

    Paper 2
    - Laxmikant: Have read it for pre so just revision
    - for RPA, a vision module is there.
    - Rest I think can be done by current affairs.
    - Again some vision modules if it looks I am missing something.

    Paper 3
    - Current affairs here are main too.
    - A thin book on internal security by Ashok kumar
    - Mrunal for economy and agri topics
    - For DM I have some short notes. That will suffice.
    - Environment : Nothing special, just revision of prelims notes for fodder and laws.

    PAPER 4
    - Just mrunal lectures and noted some definitions and keywords.

    Misc.
    - Arc summary. My own notes
    - Notes of some more reports
    - Important legislations from prsindia website.
    - Daily answer writing: 6-10 questions
    - Insights editorial compilation
    - Iasbaba yojana gists
    - Insight free tests for mains
    - Vision CA

I hope this should do. As I am also preparing for forest service, I will not to be able to do more than this
    IFS - my dream......
    Be true to yourself ......
    One step at a time....
If you can take it, you can make it
    A moment's pain is worth a lifetime's glory
