Legalising betting? will it solve the problem of degraded sports standards and black money

edited June 2013 in Current Affairs
Betting as an issue must be understand that it is human instict to take calculated risks to amass more resources and provides a sense of adventure and has been since time immerioal in form of gambling, lottery or mahabharata's chaupar. This means legal or illegal it would find in its place in form in our society.

Betting is also a industry in places where it is legal and has been a source of huge revenue for their governments.

Betting legal or illegal has deep link to fixing when large amount of money is involved, as someone would try to tweak the outcomes to favour his side.

Money from betting is easy money and would be condemned by all moral ethics and most religions, which have always called for hardearned money.

so should betting be banned and will it solve the problem(s) ?

Comments

  • Gambling and betting is banned in india except the states of goa and sikkim. and some kind of betting is sanctified by supreme court in 1967.

But the ban has failed to curb the betting as we saw in IPL case and there are so many other scandals are yet to be disclosed

We should allow betting in the games of skill with stringent laws and a regulatory body.In this way
    1. we will able to check the money which is coming from outside
    2. licencing fee on betting houses and taxation on betting gains can be source of revenue for govt.
  • @vinu but will all these solve the problems of fixing, use of money particular black money and the moral delinquency of players on ground.
As betting and fixing is still illegal in india and police has been the prosecuting authority but still these activities do take place..... will the new regulator act like a "superman" fighting the ills in the sector.

I may sound pessimistic but what i want to focus is that wil the ground realities change with all the proposed structural changes.

talking about fixing particularly in sports every sports auth. should have strict laws which has to be in place if any player found guilty.for example BCCI had banned some players for lifetime back in 1999-00. spot fixing, outcome fixing all have the origine in the dirty minds of few and if they are not learning from the past instances so same should be done with them

Yes black money can definitly be curbed by monitoring and transparent machenism.

    regarding the players' moral delinquency
the problem is really the need or you can say greed of money .it can be solved by
    1.bigger amount as pay or
2.Giving them the learnings of mahatma gandhi from their very childhood in a bigger way :D
  • If betting is legalized or not it doesn't have any effect either on black money or degraded sports.. in fact it
increases the risk of the "problem of degraded sports"

1.If betting is legalized none can use their illegal money in to legalized betting(coz each and every transaction would be monitored by I.T ) if at all legal money is used then it wud obviously increase pressure on players and their team by knowing the amount of bet that is placed on them.

2.degradation of sportsmanship : it happens by ethics and morals that he follows..moral lessons can't be effective on their minds.

suggestion: since i don't have much knowledge on the system of betting i can't give any remedy for this problem.. but i can say that designing solution for this problem needs in depth analysis of organized crime in India ,their money flow methods ,their psychological influence on greedy players by baiting with money.
  • here the problem could actually increase manifold if betting is legalised:
1)Rather than thinking about an odd arrogant nri businessman and his wife blinded by their wealth, think about those millions of poor women and children whose lives could be ruined by men getting addicted to gambling/betting and wasting their hundreds/thousands , where each rupee matters.

2)The problem of illegal flows through routes like hawala can be solved if our agencies and our gaurdians
act to prevent these than becoming a part of these and putting our hands up and saying that its better
to legalise betting is not the way a dignified nation is expected to go.

3)The prime aim of a governement of a country like india should be to empower its people, both financially
and morally rather than just running after profits and if only profits matter why not legalise many morally
wrong avenues such as lowering the age of alcohol consumption to earn more profits. There are many other
ways to earn better profits both for individuals and the nation, and gambling certainly isnt the best way
    available.

4)We have the agencies and capabilities to curb the menace of things like corruption, what we are lacking is
the will power, both as a society and as individuals.

PS: all those who are caught involved in this ipl betting scandal should be punished to the maximum, without
any biases ,rather than us ,as a society putting our hands up to this menace and trying to find ways out.
