Tinnitus problem in one ear (ringing/buzzing ear)

hey frnds.. i am preparing for civil services for last 2 years.. gave Prelims 2015 not cleared...despite my hard work. Thus was tensed/stressed a lot.

last month i started hearing some unusual sound in my left ear which no body else hear..

Met an ENT specialist. he told this is called tinnitus commonly known as ringing ear. It may be caused by stress or loud music or many other reasons. It may go in weeks/months/years or never. He gave me few medicines.

Already a month have been passed.. no sign of it going. Also now i am scared of the doctor too coz i think he may prescribe many dozes of medicine (which i read on some blogs that at times worsens the condition ) or expensive MRI tests...

I am just hoping it should go on its own.

It distracts me from studies. so much tensed about it. I try not to focus on it but its ringing right into my ears how could I then.

if any one faced/ facing same problem then plz do share your experiences... what to do? what not to do.?

Thanx a lot in advance.

  • @batmanfan, I've had it since March 2010 (Holi). Some water entered in my left ear, and ever since I've been hearing a continuous buzz. I've learned to live with it.

I've appeared in post CSE PT medical examinations. It has never caused any problem there. So there's one less thing for you to worry about.

I'd suggest that you make your peace with it: learn to ignore it.
  • thanks for your good words @zulfiqar.
one thing- can doctor help in such cases.. or its waste of time and money?
  • @batmanfan, you're welcome. :)

Unfortunately, I didn't find any doctor's medicine or advice useful. And some googling told me that I can only hope for it to go away.

@batmanfan Same here . Been having it for the past 12 years , due to loud music is what im guessing . I too have learnt to live with it , nothing to be afraid of as it doesnt harm You in anyway .

Few months will be very difficult , but as you know we evolve and it will become a part of us .

It will not affect Your studies or Your medical tests dont worry
  • And about doctors , i have read in a few sites that they "go away" but i cannot corroborate as i still have it . Its ok to try a few doctors , tell her/him about ur prep he/ she will medicate you accordingly .

    Dont worry Your not alone

    thnx....

  • There is no cure for this. I have it since last two years. It doesnt affect much now, but unfortuntely, i have heard that as times goes the ringing gets louder.
    CSE 2015. Got in.

CSE 2016. Hopefully, the hallowed All India Services.
  • it happens to some during winters..is there any other problem in your ears like blockage or something..if yes then it will go with the problem..do pranayam brahamri alternate breathing n u can try ayurvedic medicines.definitely it will help.try exercising so that if there is any blockage it will get released..dont read negative comments on internet.
  • Bhramari and anulom vilom are very effective...

Do NOT use Earphones anymore. say bye to loud music on earphones.
Adapting to Green tea, or try Chamomile tea everyday, it soothes the symptoms to a huge extent.. Always remember.. Tinnitus is just a symptom... it tells you of an underlying disease/condition.. so you have to find whats yours ? are you losing hearing ? if you fear that.. .please spend some money( depends on loc.) on audiometry in an ENT clinic preferably.. if your hearing capacity has not dipped .. then you have a HELL lot less problem... but Audiometry is a must !

and like @windsofchange says, you are NOT alone

  • Whatever you do, try to avoid too much Internet. It will make you sadder. Secondly, never tell that you have this problem during the medical for any job.
    IRTS (2015), ITS (2014).
  • I meant that searching a cure on Internet for such disease can become addictive. As someone said, Yoga, green tea etc. Changing life styles, changing the place of residence can be done.

Strictly dont tell in UPSC medicals as there isnt a way they can know this unless you tell them.
    IRTS (2015), ITS (2014).
  • As said earlier, it may be because of various reasons...some of them are: wax in front of ear drum, stress or accumulation of cough in pipe behind ear drum....so try to have a stress free life and if it is because of last one..then take steam, close your nose and mouth and swallow saliva and visit a doctor...he will prescribe u medicine for curing ur viral...

  • You can try AUGMENTIN 350 BD(formula-amoxycillin+potassium clavunate) ie two times day for 5 days.or take a muslin/cotton cloth/towel,soak for a min in boiled water and put it on area just below ear/ears ie just below urs kantaap,it help in dilating ur eustachian tube which get blocked due to infection and creating fullness, buzziness sound.
  • Kantaap :#
    बने पुजारी प्रेमी साकी, गंगाजल पावन हाला,
    रहे फेरता अविरत गति से मधु के प्यालों की माला'
    'और लिये जा, और पीये जा', इसी मंत्र का जाप करे'

Dude its not that simple....the measure you are telling is when ringing you hear due to blockage in ear or sticking of ear drums or temporaray buzzing .Tinnitus is much complex.People suffering from this have damaged Cochlea cell(Hair cell) present behind ear drums that convert sound waves into electrical signal and send it to brain so that we can hear .

As far I know 95% of times this is incurable because blood flow in least in that part of ear for self repair when damaged. There are some medicines that increases blood flow to solve this problem but they are not 100% successful ,

How to reduce it?? Eat less salts,no Aspirin, exercise(tutorials on youtube available),yoga, take less cafine, talk to your family and friends, search white noises on youtube, mask your environment like coolers ,fans in summer ,some light noise in winter so that that ringing is masked.I use noisy table fan 15 years old when I study.LOL

    Most imp: Avoid EARPHONES :-)

That's the difference between you and me,you wanna lose small and I wanna win big!!!
  • my tinnitus was due to constant blockage of nasal passage... if that is the case with you then its advisable to rectify it asap

Just like forumias there is a forum for tinnitus sufferers

www.tinnitustalk.com .. Go to success stories.. some people have cured it using some ginko tea and sauna bath..

your tinnitus might feel like nothing as compared to what others are going through... some people have voices equaling that of a LAWNMOVER !!! imagine !

but one thing is for sure.. with rapid and brazen urbanization in india... Tinnitus is BOUND to explode manifold !
actually many people might have it.. many actually feel that the little buzz they hear is the natural sound  .. because they are cognitively used to it..

please avoid earphones as @HarveySpectre rightly says

Once in our lift i met a guy who was hearing such loud music on earphones that actually the lyrics were audible to me standing 1 feet from him ! i politely asked him bhaiya , do you hear little sound when you are alone ? he said aajkal badh gaya hai due to insects !! i said lolwa ! just try again tonight ! after 3 days he said bhai kyun bata dia ab dhyaan hatta nahi hai us awaaz se... fortunately he stopped using earphones...

I suffer from Tinnitus since 2005. Earlier it used to cause me lot of discomfort and I really could not study. But like others said before you WILL learn to live with it. I have seen many good ENT specialists . The things which helped me are
Steam - Hot Fomentation. Apollo ka aata hai vaporizer for this. Do it 4 times a day 3-4 minutes. At least do it daily once , you will notice the difference. As I said it not a cure just a remedy to relieve discomfort so you can study peacefully.
I also used a steroid nasal spray but that is better if you consult a specialist and he will advise accordingly.
    Pranayam does help.
And do avoid coffee , soda , ginger. They cause acidity and in turn accentuate your Tinnitus.
Valsulva maneuver is also helpful. See it on YouTube
  • @Abhi Agharari how to use that steam brother ??? And how u manage to prepare for the exam in this lil sound . ?? Thank you .
  • I have tinnitus from seppt 2013 gave SSC exams and all after that .so I completely forgot about it ..even forgot to such extent I even wonder even I had it or not .....but recently from past ten days . m whole concentration is towards that lil sound only ....and ..all kind of . negative thaughts are coming . like what will happen in future and all ..... Preparation of exam is going good .... But tensed. About it .... Is there anybody who is having same prob ......?? And how are u managing it . ?? Thank you .
  • @Abhi Agharari how to use that steam brother ??? And how u manage to prepare for the exam in this lil sound . ?? Thank you .

Initially very difficult. I have left exams in my college midway because I could not focus at all. I think what helped was to try my level best to not think about it at all. It won't happen in one day. will take time and practice. It won't completely stop it but will reduce the fear that preceded it and the discomfort.
Regarding steam the best option is Old School. Jo ghar PE karte the during cold cough. Vessel mei pani garam karo. Towel lo and steam inhalation.
But for regular daily use. Apollo vaporizer is best. The instructions are given on box and you can ask the chemist for mock trial.
    Hope it helps.
  • @Abhi Agharari thank you brother . for your kind words. Since 2005 has ur intensity gone down or something like that ?? Is it still there when u think about it ?? .... And . u giving upsc this Time ??
